| 10 | Today, the global mathematical community celebrates four extraordinary researchers.
At the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia, the 2026 Fields Medals were awarded to Yu Deng, John Pardon, Jacob Tsimerman and Hong Wang.
Yu Deng of the University of Chicago has worked with collaborators to connect the microscopic motion of colliding particles rigorously to the familiar equations governing fluids. This resolves the part of Hilbert’s sixth problem concerned with building fluid mechanics from Newton’s laws through Boltzmann’s kinetic theory.

John Pardon of the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics has made major advances across geometry and topology. His achievements range from solving a decades-old problem about the distortion of knots to developing powerful ways of studying curves and spaces central to modern symplectic geometry.

Jacob Tsimerman of the University of Toronto works at the meeting point of number theory and geometry. His research helped establish the André–Oort conjecture, which explains how certain rare, highly structured points and shapes can be distributed within complicated mathematical spaces.

Hong Wang of the NYU Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, together with Joshua Zahl, proved the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture. Often illustrated by asking how little space is needed to turn a needle in every possible direction, the problem has important connections to the mathematics of waves and changing systems.

Presented every four years, the Fields Medal is one of the highest honours in mathematics. It recognises outstanding existing work while encouraging further achievement, and signals ideas likely to shape mathematical research for years to come.
Today’s celebration is also a reminder that transformative discoveries rarely happen on demand. They grow when researchers are given the time and space to think deeply, exchange ideas, build collaborations and follow ambitious questions wherever they lead. | 277 |
| 11 | During today's #ICM2026 opening ceremonies, the IMU announced the 2026 Fields Medals recipients:
The University of Chicago's Yu Deng, Stony Brook University's John Pardon, University of Toronto's Jacob Tsimerman, and Hong Wang of New York University and IHES.

| 15 | 1) Hong Wang: At IHES, France. Works on measure theory. Proved the 3D Kakeya conjecture
2) Jacob Tsimerman: At the University of Toronto, Canada. Works on Number theory and arithmetic geometry. Proved the Andre-Oort conjecture
3) Jack Thorne: At the University of Cambridge, UK. Works on algebraic number theory and the Langlands program. Known for his work on automorphic representations.
4) John Pardon: At the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics, USA. Works on geometry and topology. Known for proving the 3D case for the Hilbert-Smith conjecture.
5) Yu Deng: At the University of Chicago, USA. Works on partial differential equations. He showed that the Boltzmann fluid equation can be derived from Newton's laws, which is significant progress in solving Hilbert's sixth problem. | 737 |
| 16 | In 2026, he (Yu Deng) received the American Mathematical Society Eisenbud Prize in Mathematical Physics. In the same year, he received the Clay Research Award in recognition of his outstanding work on rigorously deriving the Boltzmann equation from the hard-sphere system over long time scales. Additionally, he was invited to give a 45-minute presentation at the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians. | 711 |
