Gominak's theory is likely to be only partly correct in the end - based on what I've read so far (or maybe I've understood her theory incorrectly).
Gut bacteria don't seem to directly "make use" of Vitamin D produced by our skin but there is a strong association the between diversity of gut bacteria and ACTIVE Vitamin D (that type is not measured by routine blood tests).
Bacteria are therefore involved in the CONVERSION OF INACTIVE VITAMIN D to the active form but no one knows how precisely that happens.
Paper (2020): https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-19793-8
Summary of paper: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/gut-bacteria-and-vitamin-d-what-is-the-link#Stores-of-inactive-vitamin-D
I got to move on, now. This topic will remain inconclusive because the science is not settled.
The issue of BEING INDOORS most of the time is one of the most plausible factors of "modern life" that underpins disease. But that's not enough. It has to be combined with things like antibiotics that damage the gut microbiome - making it harder to metabolise Vitamin D into the active form.
Possibly, therefore, here's the sequence:
LOW VITAMIN D (INACTIVE FORM) + DAMAGED MICROBIOME >> LESS ACTIVE VITAMIN D >> disruption and disease.

| 3 | The Harvard Medical School website confirms that there is ACUTE DEFICIENCY OF VITAMIN D IN THE USA (and I assume also in most Western countries). It also makes clear that one can't get sufficient Vitamin D only from the diet. It should mainly be from sunlight, or from supplements.
And it also admits that this issue is a PURELY MODERN ISSUE:
"Vitamin D deficiencies were rare when most men rolled up their sleeves to work in sunny fields. But as work shifted from farms to offices, that changed. ...Limited exposure to sunlight heads the list. …. The same is true for people who spend most of their time indoors and for those of us who avoid sunshine and use sunscreens to protect our skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation."
RECEPTORS: "many of the body's tissues contain vitamin D receptors, proteins that bind to vitamin D". Vitamin D plays a much wider role than merely in bone development.

| 4 | Gominak's findings help us distinguish whether changes in DIET or changes in LIVING INDOORS are crucial in prompting "modern lifestyle" diseases.
In her talk - as well as in this undated interview (https://d378j1rmrlek7x.cloudfront.net/attachments/pdf/interview-stashagominak-promotingsleepbyoptimizingvitamindlevels.pdf), she makes clear that DIET HAS NOT BEEN A MAJOR ISSUE, NOR "TOXIC CHEMICALS". Her patients don't need to change their DIET to get better. They need Vitamins D and B. That's all (of course, there's more detail).
Her advice in a nutshell:
1) Go outdoors and get sunlight (which provides VASTLY MORE benefits than Vitamin D).
2) Our gut bacteria depend on us to provide them with Vitamin D! If we are deficient in Vitamin D, bacteria can't produce enough Vitamin B (they are the ONLY natural source of Vitamin B for our body).
Given the combined deficiency of Vitamins D and B, we are susceptible to a wide range of diseases - including sleep disorders, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, rheumatic arthritis, disturbances of the musculoskeletal system, etc.
3) To kickstart a damaged microbiome (most of us have a sub-optimal microbiome), probiotics and fermented foods alone WON'T HELP. We also need to provide the complete set of EIGHT B vitamins for three months, PLUS plenty of Vitamin D first.
In this model, there's no role for "ultra-processed food" or "toxic" foods.
It is pure science at its most brilliant. | 4 |

| 6 | This EXCELLENT interview of Stasha Gominak by Steven Bartlett was very timely. It provides strong clues about "lifestyle" diseases, which are most likely nothing but diseases of Vitamin D deficiency (remaining indoors excessively) coupled with (consequent - INEVITABLE) disruption of the gut microbiome, leading to Vitamin B deficiency.
As Stasha makes clear, these diseases (such as sleep issues) started from the 1980s. Even diabetes and auto-immune diseases are explained far better through this hypothesis than through the ill-defined "ultra-processed food" idea.
I'm now much clearer about the MICROBIOME - AND the SUN. Her advice: GO OUT IN THE SUN - WHICH PROVIDES FAR MORE THAN VITAMIN D. (But in moderation!)
I've extracted 20 minutes from the 120-minute interview - the most relevant parts for my study. I'll be reading her published work shortly.

| 7 | There is no agreement today about what is "modern lifestyle" and how it adversely influences health.
Here's an illustrative list of factors from a 2026 paper - in terms of impacts on the gut microbiome.

| 8 | THIS is the "modern lifestyle".
It has two main pillars: urbanisation (with industrialisation) and the agricultural revolution.
The ONLY way to undo the "modern lifestyle" is to go back to the village with joblessness and extreme poverty.
The number of people who will die if we abandon the modern lifestyle is VASTLY GREATER than those who are dying from the modern lifestyle.
ALL "remedies" by ultra-rich tree-huggers like Robert Kennedy Jr and Vandana Shiva involve DRAMATIC INCREASE IN LEVELS OF POVERTY - which, inevitably, will kill millions if not billions (depending on how strongly these delusions are enforced).
Or, alternatively, these BRAINLESS people will start a COOKING CLASS USING TAXPAYER DOLLARS AND TIME. As if the people suffering from the downsides of modern life had any deficit in cooking skills.
Today, if anyone actually wants to learn cooking, there are MILLIONS of videos on Youtube and Facebook on how to cook. But of course, they needed the GRAND NANNY OF THE WORLD - RFK - TO TEACH THEM.
By all means act to reduce the harms from the modern lifestyle. But the biggest way to achieve that is to INCREASE WEALTH and cut healthcare costs. Not teaching people how to cook. | 14 |

| 10 | Here's a simple summary of the "modern lifestyle" issue.
HYSTERICAL people (doctors, mainly) only see the negative side of the "modern lifestyle". They fail to see that the modern lifestyle also includes MANY improvements compared to the "old" lifestyle, which overwhelm any negative effects.
The other issue is even more important: CAN the negative effects of the modern lifestyle be eliminated for the entire society? I'd say, "No!". That's because doctors themselves don't agree to what the alleged harmful lifestyle issues are. Second, people are living challenging lives of their own, each with its own complexity and circumstances, and have no time, interest or even capacity to change their lifestyle just to suit some rich doctors.
Finally, is there any role for the government in changing the modern lifestyle? The answer is a resounding "No!". That would amount to communism, central planning, and ALL communism is bad. Let there be open discussion/ debate in the society about all issues including "lifestyle | 13 |
| 11 | That was too late - 1876. We have a doctor complaining in 1801 (!) about how "MODERN TIMES" are so bad - (a) everything is artificial, (b) no one is healthy any more, (c) chronic illness dominates, (d) GOOD DIET IS THE ONLY SOLUTION!
So, when we talk today about diseases arising from the "modern" lifestyle, we are basically following the OLD PATTERN. Everyone thinks the "olden times" were better.
But there's a crucial point about which we can be 100% sure - that NONE OF THESE APPEALS BY DOCTORS MADE THE SLIGHTEST DIFFERENCE TO LIFE EXPECTANCY.
First, because most people don't read. Second, because there is so much contradictory information in the "medical" profession. Finally, because people want to be HAPPY and that means enjoying their PRESENT life - not bothering all the time about what might happen to them if they eat this or that.
===
But in more modern times a new state of society and manners has arisen, by which, disease, has both altered its form, and medicine has changed its principles---The simple state of nature is now in every vestige unknown. Artificial life prevails from the palace to the cottage, and the concomitant evils arising from this source, have rendered the constitution of the present day, weak, irritable and a prey to imaginary distress.---Perfect health is now rarely met with.
… so that the chief part of life, may be viewed as little else than a long period of chronic illness---It is this perverted state of feeling that renders every person now, more or less, a prey to anxiety respecting his health---
… no part of it surely deserves so much attention as the subject of diet, and the various articles connected with it, necessary to the support of life.
When we consider that in the catalogue of diseases, at least two thirds are of a chronic nature, or the effect of our own irregularities ; the importance of this part stands in a conspicuous view---By the very instinct of self-preservation, we are more immediately excited to its investigation, and by 'a knowledge of it, seasonably applied, we shall often have it in our power to prevent disease---Even where disease has actually occurred, we shall be enabled by this knowledge to check its progress, and at the same time to assist the efforts of medicine. | 10 |

| 13 | Richardson notes that VISCERAL FAT and OBESITY are caused by excessive pastries and SUGAR. This leads to heart disease.
What I like about Richardson is that at no place does he suggest that the government should do anything about these things.
For "public health" to claim that the government must do something about these issues is, in my view, well beyond its legitimate scope. By all means doctors should write and the media should educate, but no taxpayer funds should be used to promote dietary or "lifestyle" issues. | 11 |
| 14 | Although Richardson rambles on in his chapter on "disease from foods", he does end by pointing out a few health problems caused by over-eating.

| 15 | The hectoring and "better-than-thou" posturing of @RobertKennedyJr comes from a very long tradition of "SELF-PROCLAIMED SUPERIOR" people who told us all to go back to nature.
"Modern life" has been condemned for thousands of years. Every generation thinks that its "old" methods were best and the "modern" generation has gone bonkers.
This book on diseases of "modern life" was written in 1876 - a time when even infectious diseases had not been conquered. So much for "modern life".
A review of this book notes the SAME THEMES THAT PERVADE HYSTERICAL CLAIMS TODAY (extracts; source: https://archive.org/details/paper-doi-10_1038_013508a0/mode/2up)

Dr. Richardson's work is most valuable.
symptoms of disease from worry and mental strain
action of alcohol and tobacco discussed at length. Dr. Richardson seems to regard alcohol as an unmitigated evil,
Prof. Hughes Bennett denounced pastry as one of the chief causes of consumption. No one can doubt that pastry, alcohol, and tobacco are all capable of abuse, but whether their use is to be entirely prohibited on that account is an entirely different question.
remarks on the injurious effects of too much tea, coffee, soda-water, seltzer, and sweets, as well as on the consequences of over-eating.
it contains in addition several introductory chapters on natural life and natural death

THE SAME THEMES CONTINUE TODAY. I have no objection to people writing their memoirs and other books on the topic. I object to their dipping into the pockets of taxpayers to DEMAND that people follow a "natural" life.
Modern life will never stop causing harm - it seems. Even as life expectancy continues to rise in countries with good policies!!

| 17 | Here's the initial argument for the "lifestyle" chapter.
This will evolve as I read further, but I don't see how the main conclusion can possibly change.
Basically, this is ONE MORE SCAM (like "quarantine") for public health to expand its powers and take money from our pocket. | 13 |
| 18 | I've been a strong proponent of AI and robots for at least the past 15 years. But till late last year, I was deeply sceptical about LLMs, given the massive errors and hallucinations these models were subject to. I was expecting the AI "bubble" to burst - under those conditions.
Now, however, things have changed. From very late last year, the quality of AI models has dramatically improved as far as research capabilities are concerned. And by now (mid-2026) there is plenty of evidence that AI agents are highly effective in business settings.
Just yesterday I read about a business in the USA with 10,000 customers - each requiring individual interaction - founded and managed by a SINGLE person. He is using AI to deal with virtually all business requirements.
And now, in Australia, AI is as capable as humans in the travel industry.
The MEGA-SHEDDING OF EXISTING JOBS - which has been long anticipated - is now likely to pick up.
As I've shown, that will be GOOD for the world - as plenty of other jobs are al | 13 |
| 19 | I had stopped reading Sayerji because many of his tweets are deranged. However, based on this - a comment under this tweet - I've skimmed through this piece: https://sayerji.substack.com/p/infected-or-poisoned-or-both
This is new information for me and I'll consider it in more detail, alter. BUT as usual, Sayerji has ZERO SENSE OF PROPORTION. He is probably some kind of "medical doctor" - a human sub-species that simply can't think logically.
The germ theory is powerful because its evidence is visible not just in microscopes but in BIG DATA: in the collapse of infectious disease. Likewise, the theory of the immune system is powerful because we can see it at work through nutritional effects in BIG DATA.
The theory of chemicals/ toxins, on the other hand, is EXTREMELY WEAK because it is completely invisible in Big Data. It has to be searched through "associations", which are typically badly confounded. Yes, in a (very) few cases there IS sufficient evidence to prove toxic effects, but such cases are typically very few, and don't show up in aggregate national statistics.
Anything that's NOT big enough to show up in Big Data, is not worth fretting about.
During covid, "doctors" showed their true colours: AS AN ILLOGICAL IRRATIONAL PANICKY SUB-SPECIES. That hasn't changed. | 10 |
| 20 | I always like to get differing opinions, and so I asked grok to evaluate my Big Picture analysis:
https://grok.com/share/bGVnYWN5LWNvcHk_9d109c9d-36db-4183-9fc4-7799e34aece2
Grok is partly right. And it is true that we can't possibly get a perfect natural experiment that compares "old lifestyle" with a "modern lifestyle".
However, the rural-urban distinction is a tolerable proxy. People get to grow their own food, eat fresh organic food and drink raw milk, exercise a lot in their farm, engage with their family & neighbours (small communities depend on each other), drink fresh water from the nearby spring, and sleep well since they are physically exhausted.
Unless other factors operating in rural areas are dramatically negative, we should expect rural folk to live AT LEAST as long as those in urban areas, if not much longer.
But they don't. They DIE ***MUCH*** EARLIER.
Clearly, something is fundamentally wrong with the "modern lifestyle" hypothesis.
Lifestyle improvements can, and should be encouraged (NOT BY THE GRAND NANNY OF USA, RFK!!), but blanket claims about the modern lifestyle are simply unwarranted. | 8 |
