Understanding 0.5 Warfare 0.5 Warfare refers to conflict that exists in the grey zone between full-scale war (1.0) and complete peace (0.0). It is characterized by indirect, non-conventional means that avoid open military confrontation. Key Features: Non-kinetic and often deniable actions Combines cyber warfare, information warfare, economic pressure, and psychological operations Conducted by both state and non-state actors Aims to destabilize, demoralize, or influence the adversary without crossing the threshold of traditional war Examples: Cyberattacks on power grids, banks, or election systems Disinformation campaigns on social media Use of deepfakes and AI-generated propaganda Economic coercion through trade restrictions or financial sanctions Support to proxy militias or insurgent groups Notable Users: China’s “Three Warfares” doctrine (public opinion, psychological, and legal warfare), Russia’s hybrid warfare in Ukraine, and Pakistan’s support for proxy groups in India are all examples of 0.5 warfare in action.

India has activated its Russian-made S-400 "Sudarshan Chakra" missile defense systems to intercept a coordinated aerial assault by Pakistan on May 8, 2025. This marked the first combat deployment of the S-400 in Indian service.
