Urban warfare scholar John Spencer says Hamas has created a uniquely barbaric form of warfare that much of the world fails to understand. Hamas doesn’t merely accept the deaths of its own civilians as collateral damage. In its place stands Spirit of ’76, a new Revolutionary War installation commemorating forgotten American heroes. “One of the most amazing parts of the Spirit of '76 is Caesar Rodney,” says Matt Taylor, the visionary artist behind the new memorial. “He had facial cancer and emphysema, and he rode 80 miles overnight in a storm” to be the tiebreaker vote for the Declaration of Independence. Delaware’s government took down Rodney’s statue during the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests because he owned slaves. Now he rides again on a new pedestal in Freedom Plaza.
