Australia’s immigration debate has become one of the most persistent, divisive and misunderstood conversations in the country. It’s fascinating to watch play out. Every single day, another mainstream politician wrecks themselves on the rocks of migration. Business interests want workers. Governments want GDP growth. Industry wants customers. But what about the Australians who actually have to live with the consequences? What matters more? Social cohesion or GDP? The political class keeps trying to manage this debate rather than listen to the people. The result will be another bastardised compromise that satisfies vested interests while ignoring the national interest. Australians are struggling to buy homes, raise families and get ahead in a country that taxes them to the eyeballs, then lectures them about their privilege. We’re told Australians aren’t having enough children, so immigration must fill the gap. How about making Australia a country where young Australians can actually afford to have families again? The online debate is rapidly moving further right and more nationalist. Politicians would be foolish to ignore why. The longer governments refuse to address public concerns, the harder the demands for change will become. The Australian Lobby Group is advocating a fundamental reset of immigration policy, including a period of net negative migration. This is a non-negotiable. Australians want to see more people leave than come in. Business interests need to understand something. Your GDP figures won’t count for much if Australians lose confidence in their own country’s future. You can keep dismissing the public, or you can start listening. History is full of political elites who discovered the difference far too late and unless you want your Marie Antoinette moment, you better find a way to navigate the survival of your business interest and the social cohesion of our country.
