Protesting the cover up of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, she ended an acapella cover of Bob Marley’s ‘War’ with the words ‘Fight the Real Enemy’ before ripping the photo up.
Later revealing she had suffered abuse as a child in Ireland, her performance came nine years before John Paul II acknowledged child sexual abuse in the Catholic Church and proved to be extremely controversial. The performance received thousands of complaints including the Anti-Defamation League and Madonna who mocked the stunt on a later SNL performance.
