In 1999, university students Minh “Gooseman” Le and Jess Cliffe released Counter-Strike as a free mod for Half-Life, building it from their bedrooms as an alternative to the fast-paced sci-fi shooters around at the time. Le handled most of the coding, weapon models, and animations, while Cliffe managed the website, community, and many of the game’s iconic radio commands. The mod spread rapidly online through internet cafés and LAN parties, eventually becoming more popular than Half-Life’s own multiplayer mode and leading Valve to acquire the game and hire both creators in 2000. The series went on to evolve through Counter-Strike 1.6, Counter-Strike: Source, and eventually Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in 2012. While CS:GO had a rough launch, years of updates helped gain popularity.
