The ḥadīth of Ghadīr or the day of Ghadīr is a reference to an event that took place in 10th hijri on the 18th of Dhi al-Ḥijjah, near a location called Ghadīr Khumm. As historical reports transmit, the Messenger of Allah was returning to Medina after completing his Hajj Tamattu‘ and asked people to stop near this pond and described ‘Alī (a) as a Walī of the believers in his famous statement, “Man Kunto Mawla Fa-Hadhā ‘Alīyun Mawla” – ‘Of whomsoever I am their mawla, Alī is (also) their mawla.’ Thus, the narration and day of Ghadīr became rooted in this event. Muslim bin Aqil: The Timeless Symbol of Loyalty and Resistance Muslim ibn Aqil was one of the earliest and greatest martyrs of the movement of Imam Husayn ibn Ali against tyranny and corruption in the Muslim world. In 680 CE, the Umayyad ruler Yazid ibn Muawiya demanded allegiance from Imam Husayn. Imam Husayn refused because he believed Islam was being stripped of its moral spirit and transformed into a system of oppression and hereditary kingship. His movement was therefore not a struggle for personal power, but a stand to preserve justice, truth, human dignity, and the authentic teachings of Prophet Muhammad. When thousands of people from Kufa in Iraq invited Imam Husayn to come and lead reform and resistance against injustice, Imam Husayn entrusted Muslim ibn Aqil with a dangerous mission: travel ahead to Kufa, assess the situation, organize supporters, and confirm whether the people were sincere. Muslim accepted the assignment fully aware of the risks. He was not driven by personal ambition or illusions of safety. He understood that loyalty to truth sometimes demands sacrifice. Upon arriving in Kufa, he inspired thousands with his courage, integrity, and closeness to the family of the Prophet. But the Umayyad authorities soon unleashed threats, terror, arrests, and bribery under the governor Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad. Supporters disappeared. Fear spread through the city. Yet Muslim ibn Aqil never abandoned his mission. Even when isolated, hunted, and facing certain death, he remained steadfast in loyalty to Imam Husayn and the cause of justice. His martyrdom became the opening sacrifice in the revolution that culminated shortly afterward in the tragedy of Battle of Karbala, where Imam Husayn and his small band of companions and family members were massacred after refusing to surrender to tyranny. Muslim ibn Aqil was martyred on the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah, 60 AH (10 September 680 CE). This date is known in the Islamic calendar as the Day of Arafah — the sacred day during Hajj when pilgrims gather on the plain of Arafat in worship, repentance, and prayer. It is regarded as one of the holiest days in Islam and is associated with the perfection and completion of the religion. That Muslim ibn Aqil was executed on such a sacred day made the tragedy even more painful. The sanctity of the day did not restrain the Umayyad authorities from spilling the blood of the grandson of Abu Talib’s son and the trusted envoy of Imam Husayn. Today, more than thirteen centuries later, the memory of Muslim ibn Aqil still lives powerfully across the Muslim world. His name is invoked in gatherings, marches, and resistance fronts from West Asia to Africa. Many movements resisting occupation, oppression, and injustice continue to draw inspiration from Imam Husayn, from the example of Muslim ibn Aqil, and from belief in Muhammad al-Mahdi, whom Muslims regard as the successor and grandson of prophet Muhammad, who will emerge from seclusion to establish global justice. For millions, Muslim ibn Aqil is remembered as the model of a loyal emissary who accepted a difficult mission, stood firm under immense pressure, and remained faithful to Truth until his final breath. 🆔 Subscribe: t.me/The_Muslim

Imam Husayn is not remembered simply because he was a man from history. He remains alive in human conscience because the conditions he stood against still exist. Oppression still exists. Corruption still exists. Abuse of power still exists. Hypocrisy still exists. The silencing of truth still exists. The humiliation of human dignity still exists. As long as these conditions remain, the message of Husayn will remain necessary. When Malcolm X was once asked whether he would continue using “X” after leaving the Black Muslim movement, he explained that as long as the conditions that produced the “X” still existed, the symbol would still carry meaning. Likewise, as long as the conditions that gave rise to Karbala continue to appear in human society, humanity will continue to need Husayn. For Husayn is more than a name, more than a historical figure, and more than a tragedy to mourn. Husayn is a moral path. A living conscience. A guiding light through darkness. He represents truth over convenience, dignity over humiliation, justice over silence, compassion over cruelty, and principled sacrifice over selfish survival. To keep the name of Husayn alive is not merely to repeat his story, but to continue his mission in our own time: - by standing for justice, - by defending human dignity, - by serving humanity, - by resisting oppression, - and by refusing to surrender truth for comfort or fear. Husayn belongs to every heart searching for light in times of darkness. And we are from Husayn when we choose to live by the values for which he stood.
