🚫FATWA OF THE PERMANENT COMMITTEE REGARDING ATTENDING OR WATCHING FOOTBALL MATCHES, INCLUDING THE WORLD CUP AND SIMILAR COMPETITIONS🚫 ✍️ Question: What is the ruling on watching sporting events, such as World Cup football matches and similar competitions? 📢✒️ The Permanent Committee replied: “Football matches in which money or similar prizes are involved are unlawful, because they constitute gambling. This is because it is not permissible to take a prize or compensation (sabaq) except in competitions that are sanctioned by the Shariah, namely horse racing, camel racing, and archery. Therefore, attending such matches is unlawful, and watching them is likewise unlawful for one who knows that they involve a prize or compensation, because attending them constitutes approval of them. However, if the match is not based on any prize or compensation, does not distract a person from obligations imposed by Allah—such as the prayer and other duties—and does not contain any prohibited matters, such as exposing the ‘awrah (parts of the body that must be covered), free mixing between men and women, or the presence of musical instruments and other forms of amusement, then there is no harm in playing such a match or watching it. And Allah is the Granter of success. 📚 Etiquette Before Knowledge The status of good character and manners is exceptionally high in the sight of Allāh Almighty. Accordingly, it is narrated by Anas bin Mālik, may Allāh be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: «إن أكملَ المؤمنينَ إيماناً أحسنُهُمْ خُلُقًا، وإن حُسنَ الخلقِ ليبلغُ درجةَ الصومِ والصلاةِ» "Verily, the most complete of the believers in faith is the best of them in character, and indeed, good character reaches the rank of fasting and prayer." (Al-Ṣaḥīḥah 1590) It is narrated by Ḥudhaifah, may Allāh be pleased with him: "Among the people, ‘Abdullāh bin Mas‘ūd, may Allāh be pleased with him, was the person whose guidance, character, and conduct resembled the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ the most. This remained his state from the time he left his home until he returned to it. However, we do not know what his practice was inside the house among his family members." (Al-Bukhārī 6097) Ibn Kathīr, may Allāh have mercy upon him, stated: 🔹 ‘Alqamah [bin Qays al-Nakha‘ī] (62 AH) resembled ‘Abdullāh bin Mas‘ūd, may Allāh be pleased with him, (32 AH) in his guidance, character, and conduct; 🔹 and Ibrāhīm bin Yazīd al-Nakha‘ī (96 AH) resembled ‘Alqamah in his guidance, character, and conduct; 🔹 and Manṣūr bin al-Mu‘tamir (132 AH) resembled Ibrāhīm in his guidance, character, and conduct; 🔹 and Sufyān al-Thawrī (161 AH) resembled Manṣūr in his guidance, character, and conduct; 🔹 and Wakī‘ bin al-Jarrāḥ (197 AH) resembled Sufyān in his guidance, character, and conduct; 🔹 and Aḥmad bin Ḥanbal (241 AH) resembled Wakī‘ in his guidance, character, and conduct; 🔹 and Abū Dāwūd al-Sijistānī (Author of the Sunan) (275 AH) resembled Aḥmad bin Ḥanbal in his guidance, character, and conduct. (Al-Bidāyah wan-Nihāyah 14/618) ‘Abdullāh bin al-Mubārak, may Allāh have mercy upon him, stated: "I spent thirty years learning manners, then I spent twenty years acquiring knowledge. They (our teachers) used to learn manners before knowledge." He also stated: "It is as if two-thirds of religion consists of manners." (Ṣifat al-Ṣafwah 2/330) ‘Abdur-Raḥmān bin Mahdī stated: «كنّا نأتي الرّجل ما نريد علمه إلا أن نتعلّم من هديه وسمته ودلّه» "We used to come to a man, desiring not his knowledge, but only to learn from his guidance, his exemplary conduct, and his demeanor." He also stated: «كان عليّ بن المدينيّ وغير واحد يحضرون عند يحيى بن سعيد القطّان ما يريدون أن يسمعوا شيئا إلا أن ينظروا إلى هديه وسمته» "‘Alī bin al-Madīnī and more than one [scholar] used to attend the gathering of Yaḥyā bin Sa‘īd al-Qaṭṭān, not desiring to hear anything, but only to look at his guidance and his exemplary conduct." It is narrated that a man from the people of desires came to Abu Ayyub As-Sakhtiyani (rahimahullah) and said: > *"O Abu Bakr! I want to say one word to you."* He replied with a gesture of his hand: *"Not even half a word."* (Al-Ibanah al-Kubra by Ibn Battah). In another narration, he placed his fingers in his ears so he would not hear the man’s voice. This is because "the one who sits with someone becomes like them." We must take our knowledge only from reliable Salafi scholars and Mashaykh and their students who are known to be upon the correct creed. Today, the risk is even greater. Through social media, one can "sit with" and be influenced by anyone. Misguided callers are widespread on platforms like YouTube, spreading Ikhwani and Qutbi methodologies under the guise of knowledge. They strive to spread malice and suspicion against Muslim rulers, particularly against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. We remind ourselves to tread the path of salaf and distance ourselves from the people of innovations *Hisham bin Hassan*(rahimahullah) said: > "*Muhammad bin Sirin* and *Al-Hasan Al-Basri* used to say: 'Do not sit with the people of desires, do not argue with them, and do not listen to them.'" Isi bina par usey Administration se nikaal diya gaya hai aur matla kiya jata hai ke hum Takfeeri nazariyaat aur Ahlus Sunnah ke mukhaalif digar gumrah-kun manaahij se mukammal bara'at ka izhaar karte hain. Yeh shakhs apne channel aur posts ka khud zimmedaar hai. Iski elaaniyah tauba ya rujoo na zaahir hone tak Humari naseehat hai ke iske channels aur tehreero se doori ikhtiyar ki jaye. Is pur-fitan daur mein hum Allah ki rassi ko mazbooti se thaamne aur Deen par jame rehne ki talqeen karte hain. Insan apni hidayat ka malik nahi, isliye Rasulullah ﷺ yeh dua kiya karte the: يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ "Aye dilon ko pherne wale!
