American photographer and director Louis Schwartzberg has spent decades filming nature, capturing moments that we often simply don't notice. His film "Wings of Life" (for Disneynature, narrated by Meryl Streep) features breathtaking shots: hummingbirds suspended in mid-air near flowers, bats filmed at night in slow motion, and monarch butterflies in Mexico, making the trees appear almost alive.
Behind each of these shots lies countless sleepless nights spent waiting for the perfect moment. In the early days of his career, a single roll of film could take a month to shoot. Later, Schwartzberg left cameras running in time-lapse mode 24/7 – and he has done so for over 30 years.
"We must appreciate the beauty in the most ordinary things."
For Schwartzberg, this work is not just about technique and patience. His desire to see wonder in the details was shaped by his parents, who survived the Holocaust and started their lives in the United States from scratch.
"I grew up in Brooklyn in a family that had been through terrible things," he said. "They taught me to appreciate every moment. When I look at a flower or a butterfly's wing, I don't just see an object. I see a miracle that exists because someone once survived so that I could see it."
His films are not just documentaries. They are a reminder that life is fragile, beautiful, and deserves our attention. It's no coincidence that his series "Moving Art" was released on Netflix, and his work has been shown in IMAX theaters.
