⭐️️️️️️️️️️️A series of events dedicated to the 81st anniversary of the Great Victory Day-2026 Events at MGIMO In the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia, the university celebrated Victory Day with exhibitions, concerts, a Memory Watch, and charity events. In our #MGIMOAboutVictory series, we report on all the events that took place. 🕯Memory Watch at the memorial "To MGIMO alumni – Defenders of the Fatherland" On May 12, a solemn flower-laying ceremony at the monument brought together students from different countries, faculty members, veterans, and alumni. The ceremony was preceded by a moment of silence.

"The tradition of celebrating May 9 at this memorial is a tribute to those who built the university during the height of the war. Many of the first faculty members and students came to MGIMO straight from the front lines. Among the alumni are six Heroes of the Soviet Union. Both during the war and after, people of different nationalities, united by a sense of duty, served the country," emphasized Anatoly Torkunov, Rector of MGIMO.

🎗“Our Victory” Festival Also on May 12, the inner courtyard of MGIMO featured interactive zones: an exhibition of wartime weapons and military equipment (including the legendary "Katyusha" and Willys), a display on the evolution of soldiers' uniforms, a poetry meadow, the "I'm Writing to You, Hero!" campaign, and a field kitchen serving 1,000 people. 🖼Exhibition "Victory is One for All" From May 7 to 15, the atrium of the new building housed an exhibition on the contribution of the peoples of the USSR to the Great Victory. The exhibition featured authentic letters from the front, war maps, posters, photographs, and stories of Red Army soldiers, partisans, and home front workers. 📚Round Table "The People of Victory" On May 7, the A.S. Griboyedov Literary Club "Inspiration" and the MGIMO Associations of International Students held a round table dedicated to the feat of representatives of all peoples of the USSR.

🌐Website "MGIMO about Victory" A web resource collected all announcements and news about the commemorative events, as well as the sections "Scientific Regiment" and "Victory in Faces" with stories about heroes on both visible and invisible fronts. 📸Campaign "Faces of Our Victory" Over several days, MGIMO students and staff collected photos of their veterans so that the faces of the heroes would appear on the university's main screens on the eve of the holiday. 💵Charity campaign for residents of the Luhansk People's Republic From April 27 to May 8, the university held a fundraising drive to help residents of the Luhansk People's Republic.

From May 3 to 8, a delegation of MGIMO students made a humanitarian visit to Luhansk, during which they delivered targeted aid (medicines) to residents, as well as held meetings with representatives of government agencies and youth communities of the Republic.

🇷🇺🇮🇳 Russia — India: Privileged Strategic Partnership and Elite Training at MGIMO On May 14-15, a meeting of the BRICS Foreign Ministers was held in New Delhi, India, with the participation of Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. ✒️ On May 13, Sergey Lavrov held talks with his Indian counterpart, Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. The Foreign Ministers discussed a wide range of issues, reaffirming their commitment to further developing the special and privileged strategic partnership between the two countries. They also assessed the results of 20 years of cooperation within the BRICS format and discussed the upcoming BRICS Summit of heads of state, scheduled for September 2026. 🤝 Russia and India are actively cooperating within the UN, the SCO, and the G20.

"Bilateral cooperation is becoming increasingly important in the search for global responses to worldwide challenges, including within the frameworks of BRICS and the SCO," noted Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

👉 Subrahmanyam Jaishankar emphasized the steady growth of bilateral cooperation in recent years, in which the economic and energy components have gained even greater significance. MGIMO has been training Indology specialists

since 1954

, when the Department of Indo-Iranian and African Languages began to be teach Hindi. Since then,

over 700 students

have studied Hindi as their first language at MGIMO. Today,

Bauyrzhan Momyshuly, a Kazakh from Almaty, was a battalion commander in the legendary Panfilov division that defended Moscow in 1941. His battalion receives a mission: to wear down the enemy’s superior forces and slow down their advance on Moscow near Volokolamsk. A story about how people of different nationalities in the same trench, behind the same machine gun, learn to trust each other and cover each other’s backs.

🇷🇺“The Monuments Men”, Robert M. Edsel and Bret Witter (USA — United Kingdom, 2009)

Americans, Britons, French, Canadians — a team of art historians and museum curators. No one ordered them to take up arms. Yet they go behind the front line to save Europe’s cultural heritage.

🗺“Following Partisan Trails”, Stevan Vrgović (USSR — Yugoslavia, 1977)

The author is a Yugoslav patriot who fought in a partisan detachment on Soviet territory and later, as part of the Soviet army, took part in the defence of Stalingrad. A documentary story about how Serbs, Russians, Ukrainians, and Belarusians became brothers in arms in the very thick of the war.

🌟“The English Patient”, Michael Ondaatje (Canada — United Kingdom, 1992)

North Africa. A Sikh sapper, a Canadian nurse, an English thief, and a man burned to the bone lying on a bed — Hungarian by passport, Italian by upbringing, British by habit. All of them former enemies who find shelter in a Tuscan monastery. A book about how nationality ceases to matter when only one thing remains: you are alive, and next to you is someone with whom you can share hope.

⭐️ Friendship of Peoples during the Great Patriotic War: Stories of Courage, Brotherhood, and Comradeship During the Great Patriotic War, not only Soviet citizens fought on the Soviet front. Alongside Red Army soldiers, thousands of foreign volunteers fought — from French pilots to the children of global communist movement leaders. ❓ How did it happen that the son of a Chinese leader became a Soviet intelligence officer, and Spaniards guarded the Kremlin? Let’s find out. 🇫🇷 “Normandie-Niemen”: French Pilots in the Skies over the USSR

🔴 The most famous foreign unit within the Red Army was the “Normandie-Niemen” fighter regiment. Negotiations for its creation began in 1941 on the initiative of General Charles de Gaulle. In March 1943, French pilots completed training on Soviet Yak-1 and Yak-3 fighters, and by April they were defending Soviet skies. 🔴 After the war, the French returned to Paris in Soviet-gifted aircraft, which could even be seen at the Le Bourget Air Show in the summer of 2017.

🎖️ Ludvík Svoboda: A General Who Fought like a Soldier

In 1943, a Czechoslovak battalion was formed within the Red Army, which in 1944 was expanded into an army corps under the command of

Ludvík Svoboda — the future president of Czechoslovakia.

Ivan Konev, Marshal of the Soviet Union, in his memoirs, praised Svoboda as a commander but ironically noted his strange habit:

instead of commanding the corps, Svoboda would often grab a gun and go into battle like an ordinary soldier, for which he repeatedly received reprimands from the Soviet command.

From the very first days of the war, Spaniards — Republicans who had emigrated to the USSR after Francisco Franco came to power in Spain — fought in the ranks of the Red Army.

A separate Spanish corps was formed within the NKVD, tasked with

an essential and top secret mission: guarding the Moscow Kremlin.

🇨🇳 The son of Mao Zedong, who was mistaken for a Buryat

Mao Zedong's eldest son, Mao Anying (who took the name Sergei Mayev in the USSR),

was a student of the Ivanovo International Boarding School. From the first days of the Great Patriotic War, Mao Anying aspired to the front: he even wrote three letters to Joseph Stalin asking him to send him to the front line, which, unfortunately, remained unanswered.

Nevertheless, Lieutenant Mayev served in the intelligence service of the 109th Guards Rifle Division, distinguished himself on the Transbaikal Front in the war with Japan.

Mongolia was one of the USSR’s most faithful allies during the war. Immediately after hostilities began on the Soviet front, a fund was established in Mongolia to aid the Soviet Union.

Military and humanitarian aid, uniforms, and even gift parcels for Soviet citizens were sent annually.

We congratulate you on the 81st anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War and World War II! 🌍 Victory Day is an event of global significance — a symbol of the triumph of life over death, and of good over evil. It is the day when the united efforts of the world’s peoples crushed Nazism — an ideology that sought the destruction of entire nations and cultures. ⭐️ The Great Victory laid the foundations of the post‑war world order, based on the principles of justice, humanism, and the right of every people to determine their own destiny. The memory of that war knows no national borders: it unites millions of people, regardless of their nationality, language, or religion. 🇷🇺 For our multinational Fatherland, this holiday holds a special, sacred meaning. 🟥 The Great Victory was achieved through the joint efforts of all the peoples of the Soviet Union. On the battlefields and on the home front, hundreds of nationalities and ethnic groups fought shoulder to shoulder. The fraternal friendship of peoples became the unshakable foundation that allowed us to stand firm against a common enemy.

🌐 The history of MGIMO — one of the world’s leading centers of intercultural communication and friendship of peoples — also dates back to the years of the Great Patriotic War. The idea of establishing the University emerged shortly after the Battle of Stalingrad: in the autumn of 1943, the Faculty of International Relations was opened at Lomonosov Moscow State University, which in 1944 became an independent institute — MGIMO.

🟥 The multinational community of its students and alumni is one of the University’s greatest values. We’ve gathered all the food spots at MGIMO in one post. 1️⃣ Tryoshka

Every MGIMO student has definitely been here at least once. This is the university’s main cafeteria, and the most popular place for lunch, so it’s always crowded. Even though it has three floors, every table gets taken during the long break. The menu is very diverse: whether you want a full meal or just a quick snack, this is the place to go.

2️⃣ Costa

The second most popular spot in the university. Every break, there’s a line for

good coffee and fresh pastries

, while the tables are occupied from early morning.

3️⃣ Monte

The Monte-Cristo café is located near the Conference Hall, but even the distance doesn’t stop students from every faculty and building from coming here, and you still have to be quick to get a table.

Delicious food and friendly staff

are what Monte is known for.

4️⃣ Fresh

A small coffee shop near the main cloakroom. Don’t judge it by its size: if you’re not getting coffee at Costa, you’re probably getting it here. The menu also includes

Located on

the fifth floor of the new building

. There are fewer students here, though it can still get crowded. Here you can get tasty sandwiches, sweets from all over the world, and

Its official name is “FAST LLC”, but because of the

“Watch Your Step!”

sign on the door, students call this place “Stupenka” (“step” in Russian). Inside, there are

coffee machines and a small shop

where you can always buy snacks.

There are noticeably fewer people here than at the previous spots, but that has nothing to do with the quality of the food. It’s a place where you can

have a tasty and filling breakfast, lunch, or even dinner

8️⃣ MP Cafeteria

This place is basically

a mini version of Tryoshka

, where you can always have lunch or buy delicious

ice cream

9️⃣ Buffet

If you want to sit in a cozy café where it’s always

quiet, not crowded

😗The 11th Vietnam Day at MGIMO 🎓One of MGIMO’s core values is its multinational community of students and alumni. Representatives of over 90 countries and peoples live, study, and grow together here. Students from different nations not only get to discover Russia and other cultures but also have the opportunity to express their unique identity and cherish their own history and traditions. On April 30, MGIMO hosted the 11th Vietnam Day, organized by the Vietnamese Student Association and the ASEAN Centre with the support of the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in the Russian Federation and Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU).

Currently, 26 students from Vietnam are studying at MGIMO.

The event was opened by Andrey Baykov, Vice-Rector for Science and Research.

He emphasized the high importance of Russian-Vietnamese relations and highlighted MGIMO’s role as a leading center for training specialists in Oriental and Vietnamese studies.

The academic conference that followed the opening was dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the “Doi Moi” reforms — a comprehensive transformation program in the economic, political, social, and cultural spheres initiated by the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Participants discussed Vietnam’s economic development, its role within ASEAN and global politics, as well as the specific features of public administration modernization. For the first time, a joint session of MGIMO and FEFU was held, featuring leading Russian experts in Vietnamese studies.
