🔎 #MGIMOalumni work in a wide variety of fields, including on the international stage. 🇧🇬 Today we tell the story of an alumna of the School of International Relations, Director-General of UNESCO (2009–2017) – Irina Bokova. Irina Bokova graduated from MGIMO in 1976. Her diplomatic career began at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria and continued at the country's Permanent Mission to the UN. In 1996–1997, Irina Bokova served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria and State Secretary for Bulgaria's relations with the European Union. 🌐 In 2005, Irina Bokova was appointed Ambassador of Bulgaria to France and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO. And in 2009, she made history by becoming the first woman to lead UNESCO since the organization's founding. In 2013, she was re-elected to the post – a clear recognition of her professionalism and diplomatic talent.

During her tenure, UNESCO underwent major administrative reforms, and the organization significantly strengthened its position in preserving cultural heritage and expanding access to education. Irina Bokova personally oversaw programs to protect World Heritage sites in conflict zones.

🌐 On June 17–19, MGIMO hosted delegations from Türkiye, Madagascar, and Serbia. 🇹🇷 On June 17, MGIMO welcomed Hakan Fidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye. The Minister visited the University as part of the official visit of the Turkish delegation to Russia. Anatoly Torkunov, MGIMO Rector and RAS Academician, personally welcomed the guest and noted his outstanding contribution as a statesman and international scholar to the development of international relations. 🎓 By decision of the Academic Council, Hakan Fidan was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of MGIMO. Following the ceremony, the Minister delivered a lecture for students, teaching faculty, and staff of the university. Students had the opportunity to ask the head of Turkish diplomacy questions — about Türkiye's role in a multipolar world, the prospects for cooperation in Central Asia, and whether there is room for human emotions in big politics. 🇲🇬 On June 19, MGIMO hosted Alice Ndiaye, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Madagascar. The delegation of the Republic of Madagascar met with Anatoly Torkunov, MGIMO Rector. During the meeting, the parties discussed diplomatic training and the development of educational cooperation. MGIMO confirmed its readiness to organize advanced training courses for staff of Madagascar's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. ✒️ Following the talks, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between MGIMO and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Madagascar.

The Minister highly praised the university's role in training personnel for African states and expressed confidence that the agreements reached would serve as a catalyst for the development of Russian-Madagascar relations.

🌐 In addition to the official program, Alice Ndiaye met with activists of the "Russia — Africa: What's Next?" Youth Forum and spoke with Malagasy students at MGIMO. 🇷🇸 On June 19, MGIMO welcomed a Serbian delegation led by Arno Gujon, Director of the Office for Public and Cultural Diplomacy of the Government of Serbia. The guests were greeted by Stanislav Surovtsev, Vice-Rector for Youth Policy, Social Work, and International Relations, who spoke about the traditionally close ties between our countries in the field of education. 📌 Serbian has been taught at MGIMO for over 70 years. Russia – ASEAN: MGIMO’s Role in Advancing Strategic Partnership 🇧🇳🇰🇭🇮🇩🇱🇦🇲🇾🇲🇲🇵🇭🇸🇬🇹🇭🇻🇳🇷🇺 📍On June 17–18, Kazan is hosting the Russia–ASEAN Summit, marking the 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). During the anniversary meeting, leaders will review the progress of the Russia–ASEAN strategic partnership and identify new areas of cooperation in the political, economic, and humanitarian spheres.

"Russia-ASEAN relations have the character of a strategic partnership which, amid geopolitical turbulence, serves as an important stabilizing factor in the Asia-Pacific region and contributes to the formation of a balanced security architecture and equal, mutually beneficial cooperation," said Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan Visits MGIMO University 🇹🇷 On June 17, MGIMO University welcomed a distinguished guest — Hakan Fidan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Türkiye, who visited the university as part of the official visit of the Turkish delegation to Russia.

The visit once again underscores the strong academic and people-to-people ties between MGIMO and Türkiye: ⚪today, the university cooperates with four Turkish higher education institutions, ⚪students from both countries participate in exchange programs, ⚪eight Turkish nationals are currently studying at MGIMO, and over 220 Russian students are learning the Turkish language.

🎓 The Minister was welcomed by Anatoly Torkunov, MGIMO Rector, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who highlighted not only Hakan Fidan’s distinguished public service career but also his significant academic contribution to the development of international relations. By decision of the Academic Council, the Minister was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of MGIMO.

With this distinction, Hakan Fidan joins the ranks of MGIMO Honorary Doctors, which include António Guterres, UN Secretary-General, Aleksandar Vučić, President of Serbia, and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of Türkiye, along with many other leading figures of global politics and economics.

Following the award ceremony, Hakan Fidan delivered a lecture to students and faculty members. ➖He noted that for over 80 years, MGIMO has remained one of the world’s leading institutions for training international affairs professionals, producing outstanding diplomats, politicians, journalists, lawyers, and business leaders. 🤝 Speaking about Russian-Turkish relations, the Minister emphasized that they are grounded in mutual interests, historical memory, and good-neighborly ties, enabling them to serve as a source of stability amid growing uncertainty in international affairs. 🕊️ Hakan Fidan also highlighted the role of diplomacy, describing it as the primary instrument for conflict resolution. 💛💛💛 Last week, as part of the SPIEF-2026 Youth Day, MGIMO and the ANO "Directorate of the World Youth Festival" held a joint session "Youth Laboratory of the New World Order." More than 100 people took part in the event, including young people from Russia and foreign countries. Zulfiya Sharafutdinova, graduate of the School of International Relations of the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University and assistant to the Vice-Rector for Youth and Information Policy, shared her experience of participating in SPIEF-2026 and the "Youth Laboratory of the New World Order" session with us. 🌐 How did you manage to get to SPIEF-2026?

It wasn't easy to get to SPIEF. The selection process was competitive, taking into account candidates' achievements, social activities, participation in youth projects, and leadership qualities. So for me, the invitation to the forum was not only a great honor but also recognition of the work I had been doing for several years.

🌐 You took part in the joint session of MGIMO and the ANO "Directorate of the World Youth Festival" as part of the SPIEF-2026 Youth Day, "Youth Laboratory of the New World Order." What was the atmosphere at the session?

This session was

one of the most inspiring events of the forum.

The room brought together young leaders, representatives of international organizations, experts, and participants of major youth projects from different countries. The main topic was the development of international youth cooperation and the role of young people in shaping the future system of international relations.

📌 What did you find most interesting about the session?

I was most struck by

the atmosphere of open dialogue.

Despite differences in cultures and viewpoints, all participants were united by a desire to find solutions to global challenges. Such meetings show that youth diplomacy is becoming an important tool for international interaction today.

🔴 Zulfiya is convinced: young people are becoming the bridge that connects countries through education and culture.

Undoubtedly, international forums and festivals play a huge role in

strengthening cooperation between Russia and Kyrgyzstan.

It is young people who are becoming the bridge connecting countries through education, culture, science, and civic initiatives.

I see real results from this work.

After participating in forums, new joint projects between universities emerge, academic exchange programs expand, and the number of educational initiatives implemented jointly by Russian and Kyrgyz partners increases.

⛓️‍💥 What role do such events play in the development of international youth cooperation?

Such platforms help young people understand each other better, build trust, and create professional connections for the future. Today, many acquaintances that begin at forums and festivals grow into joint research, cultural projects, and international teams.

This is one of the most promising areas for the development of Russian-Kyrgyz relations

, because it builds the foundation for long-term partnership between our countries for years to come.

🏆 MGIMO — Champion of the XXV Rector’s Cup in Mini-Football On June 7, the XXV Rector’s Cup in mini-football, dedicated to Russia Day, took place at the University’s football stadium. For the first time, the MGIMO team became the tournament champion. ⚽️ The competition featured 32 teams representing diplomats of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and embassies of foreign countries in Russia:

Azerbaijan, Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Venezuela, Vietnam, Indonesia, Yemen, Kazakhstan, Cambodia, Colombia, Kyrgyzstan, Kuwait, Laos, UAE, Peru, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Ecuador; as well as the Latin American teams "Atlético World" and "Unión Internacional" (which united representatives from Ecuador, Yemen, Chad, Benin, Madagascar); the team "Krasny Molot" (Red Hammer), which has participated in the tournament since 2001 (most of its players are the now-grown children of MGIMO graduates — the team was founded by German citizens under the steady captaincy of A. Schumann); the team of the general sponsor — Snegiri Development company; and the team of the University’s professors and staff.

⚡️ At noon, the opening ceremony and parade of participants were held on the pitch. To the march of the orchestra of the Military University of the Russian Ministry of Defense, the teams marched in front of the guest of honor tribune carrying national flags and signs of their countries; the parade was led by the referee team from the Moscow Football Federation. 🎤 As is tradition, the ceremony was opened by Anatoly Torkunov, MGIMO Rector, RAS Academician, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

He warmly greeted everyone gathered at the University stadium and reminded that

the first Rector’s Cup in 2001

featured

15 teams

from foreign embassies, while

this year there are 32,

proving the tournament generates interest and attracts more sports enthusiasts.

💬 Tanju Bilgiç, tournament’s guest of honor, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Turkey, addressed the participants with a welcoming speech.

The Ambassador noted that he is glad to be at

MGIMO — a leading university and a forge of diplomats

; he also welcomed everyone, wished the participants a good game, and thanked the University Rector for inviting the Embassy team to take part in the tournament.

🌐 Ramil Sanatullov, General Director of Snegiri Development — the tournament’s long-time sponsor — noted that sport unites people of different nationalities. On behalf of the University, he was presented with a letter of gratitude from the Rector addressed to the founder of the company, Alexander Chigirinsky, for many years of support for the competition. ⭐️ Sergey Khusainov, legendary Soviet and Russian footballer, FIFA referee, a guest of honor at the event, greeted the participants and guests of the Rector’s Cup, remarking that football is more than just a game; the flying ball captures the attention of people from different nationalities, fostering friendship and unity. 🏆 All participants and distinguished guests received from the University and the general sponsor participant diplomas for the XXV Rector’s Cup and commemorative prizes — T-shirts and souvenirs with the emblems of MGIMO, the XXV Rector’s Cup, and the sponsor’s logo — Snegiri.
