Singaporeans need to pay attention to the plight of prisoners on Changi prison’s death row NOW. If we don't fight for these men and women as the state continues to violate their human rights, then we will only have ourselves to blame when they come for ours next. In the first half of this two-part post, we explore the valiant civil rights struggle the prisoners have put up over the years, and how the state has clamped down harder and harder on their rights, for daring to stand up and challenge the death penalty regime. In the second half of this two-part post, we explore the deterioration of their prison conditions over the years and examine how Datch's and Pannir's legal cases relate to wider ongoing problems within the legal and prison system. Three days ago, families of death row prisoners, joined by students from SATU, delivered a joint clemency letter to the Istana, pleading for clemency to be granted to their loved ones on death row. The act of delivering letters to the Istana is not new. Since the 2000s, many letter deliveries to the Istana have been undertaken by families of loved ones on death row, and members of the public who oppose the death penalty. More recently, letter deliveries have also been undertaken by concerned citizens in response to the government's continued tied with Israel despite the ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza - just today, court reconvened to debate the charges brought against three women who allegedly organised a procession to the Istana to deliver letters calling for the Singapore government to cut ties with Israel. In recent weeks, the Singapore Courts dismissed two human rights-related cases involving 5 death row prisoners. They are now at imminent risk of execution, after 10 others already killed in 2025. While many institutions are part of this machinery of murder, none play as wide-ranging a role as the Attorney General’s Chambers. They call the shots on who to charge with capital offences, decide on who receives certificates of substantive assistance, advise on clemency decisions, oppose applications brought by prisoners — sometimes even arguing for court cases to be expedited so that executions can be carried out. It’s high time to call to account those who perpetrate state violence, and to renew the call for an immediate moratorium on the death penalty. The Ministry of Home Affairs' new survey claims broad support for the death penalty. But without clarity on who was surveyed, how questions were phrased, or why these ‘cities’ remain unnamed - how may we even reasonably make sense of these results? Correlation isn’t causation. Fewer drug seizures don’t prove deterrence. And those most affected, (that being low-level couriers and their families) are left voiceless, while local critics are silenced relentlessly by POFMA. A popularity contest should never decide who lives or dies. Justice without empathy is cruelty, and progress without transparency is nothing more than control. When will we really Majulah, Singapura? TJC: First clemency in 27 years brings relief, but more must be done to end executions The Transformative Justice Collective expressed relief at the clemency granted to Tristan Tan, noting it is the first such case in 27 years. Pannir's siblings got to speak to him after court adjourned. This is the only chance they have to have any physical contact, to hold hands through the holes on the glass panel in the courtroom. Even during prison visitation, they are completely separated by the glass panel. The last time Pannir was physically in court was six years ago. This means that this is the first time in six years that his family got to have any physical contact with him. We'll share more updates in time to come. Live updates from Pannir's hearing today: As of 2.45PM today, 36 members of the public are seated in the Court of Appeal courtroom. The police officers standing guard outside the courtroom are not allowing anymore people to enter. Pannir Selvam was scheduled for execution on 20 February 2025. On the eve of his execution, he received a stay of execution having filed his own application two days before. On  6 August, Pannir will have a second hearing of his stay of execution before the full Court of Appeal.
