The state plans to kill Pannir Selvam at dawn on 8th October, despite international outcry and grave human rights concerns. TJC, SATU, HOME, SDP, RDU and Christian faith leaders in Singapore gather in solidarity to hold vigil for Pannir at four different locations across the island on Tuesday, 7th October. The vigils will be held simultaneously from 7-9pm, and they will also be streamed on Zoom. For those who would like to hold vigil overnight, one of the venues, The Arts and Civil Space, will continue hosting the space for the vigil till 6am on Wednesday 8th October when the execution is expected to take place. The public is welcome to join us at any of the venues to show your solidarity. If you’re joining the vigil at TACS, you can feel free to come at any time between 7pm on Tuesday to 6am on Wednesday, and stay for as long as you like. Let us gather to grieve, rage against the injustice of the death penalty, and remember Pannir’s remarkable legacy as an abolitionist, activist, poet and songwriter.

On AGC’s first day back to work after the weekend, a crowd of 250 people gathered at Hong Lim Park from 7pm onwards, facing the building which AGC is housed in, chanting “AGC, there’s blood on your hands”, protesting the significant role the AGC plays in deciding who lives and who dies, under Singapore’s death penalty regime. The Singapore government executed Datchinamurthy Kataiah this afternoon. His family invites members of the public to attend his funeral today, 5.45-8.45PM at 37 Sin Ming Drive #01-581. Update: The prison called Datchinamurthy Kataiah'a family to inform them that the execution would be carried out and that President @tharman.sg has rejected his clamency. The prison refused to tell them what time the execution would be carried out, and also refused a final visit, phone call, or even for a message to be passed to him.

At around 12.30am last night, Datch’s family and the undertaker the family had arranged got phone calls from prison telling them to “stand by” because Datch’s execution has temporarily been put on hold. However, the prison said it was possible the execution may still go ahead later today. The undertaker was asked how much lead time he will need if the execution is proceeding, and the family was told that any update will only come after 12 noon today. Datch was not executed at dawn today. Please continue keep him and his family in your prayers. The state is killing Datch tomorrow. Sami, Lingkes, Jumaat, and Pannir are also at risk of execution. They were wronged at every turn, on top of being put through worsened death row conditions. Datch has been on death row since 2015. For many years, he has struggled to fight for not only himself, but everyone else on death row. When no lawyer could be persuaded to take on legal applications, Datch stepped up to advocate for himself and his fellow prisoners. His efforts have made an impact on important matters of public interest. For example, if not for the determination and courage of prisoners like Datch, we would never have got a clear declaration from the courts that the Singapore Prison Service had acted unlawfully when they forwarded prisoners’ private correspondence—including correspondence with lawyers—to the Attorney-General’s Chambers. Singapore intends to hang Datchinamurthy Kataiah on Thursday, 25 September. If the execution proceeds, his family will need help with covering funeral costs. Last Saturday, the police were called on students for door-knocking and talking to residents to understand their sentiments on the death penalty. This disproportionate response is a stark reminder of how narrow our democratic spaces for discussions are. As SATU, we oppose this suppression of our voices. Since even the act of flyering and talking to our neighbours seemingly warrants police intimidation, we are taking to Hong Lim Park to demand our voices to be heard. Singapore has had a long tradition of holding vigil for death row prisoners outside Changi Prison. Recently, the police have been intimidating those holding vigil, through on-the-spot questioning and pressing charges. In 2022, we held vigil for Nagaenthran and Datchinamurthy; in 2024, we held vigil for the many lives we had lost to the gallows. This morning, we received news that the Singapore government had scheduled Datchinamurthy Kataiah for execution this Thursday. He was first scheduled for execution in April 2022, but managed to fight for a stay of execution without a lawyer. In August 2022, Datch and three others filed a constitutional challenge in court, which was eventually dismissed. Swipe through the post to read more about these. If we don’t manage to stop his execution, Datch says he will walk to the gallows with his head held high, because it is not he, but those who are hungry to spill his blood, who should be ashamed. We are holding a candlelight vigil for him this coming Tuesday. 400 of us rallied for Datch’s life to be spared in 2022. Now, we gather again for him one more time. This is the story of Datchinamurthy Kataiah, who represents the deep human desire to grow, live and build friendship, even in the face of the harshest cruelties. Three years ago, 400 of us gathered at Hong Lim Park to fight for his life, and his life was spared. As we chanted and honoured his struggle, his family stood outside the perimeter of Hong Lim Park, moved to tears by how many Singaporeans had rallied for a Malaysian on death row.
