EXECUTIONS RESUME IN SINGAPORE The new year has only just begun and Singapore is already back to killing—at least one prisoner is set to be hanged next week. The Singapore Prison Service informed Ramdhan bin Lajis and his family that his execution has been scheduled for Friday, 9 January 2026. Ramdhan is a Singaporean who has spent about 7 years on death row. He was convicted in 2018 of trafficking not less than 29.51g of heroin and sentenced to the mandatory death penalty. His conviction and sentence was upheld by the Court of Appeal in 2019. He was one of 13 prisoners whose private correspondence was illegally copied and forwarded by the Singapore Prison Service to the Attorney-General’s Chambers. Our thoughts are with Ramdhan and his loved ones this week, as they spend what time they have left together. The Transformative Justice Collective has seen up close how overwhelming and traumatic the days before an execution can be for families of persons on death row, and can only imagine how difficult it must be for the prisoners themselves. Ramdhan had a co-accused who was also convicted and sentenced to the mandatory death penalty, but TJC does not have any contact with this person’s family. However, based on the established practice of executing co-accused persons on the same day, it seems likely that this other person has also received an execution notice.

Presently, a constitutional challenge against the death penalty is pending in the courts, with the hearing set on 3rd December. Another three death row prisoners have been issued executions notices for next week. The state continues its killing spree in the most murderous year in two decades despite there being a constitutional challenge against the mandatory death penalty pending in the courts. The challenge is currently scheduled for hearing on 3 December. We must speak up and stand in solidarity with Sami and the two others whom the State plans to kill. Not in our names. Family members of three executed death row prisoners and activists are bringing a constitutional challenge against Singapore’s mandatory death penalty for drug offences. The applicants include the sisters of Syed Suhail, Nazeri bin Lajim, and Tangaraju Suppiah. Their brothers were executed between 2022 and 2025 under the mandatory death penalty for drug offences. The co-founders of the Transformative Justice Collective - Rocky Howe, Kokila Annamalai, Kirsten Han and Jolovan Wham - are also part of this application. On 15 October, Hamzah bin Ibrahim and his co-accused, the last woman on death row, were executed by the state. We came together at Hong Lim Park the same evening to hold vigil for both of them, and mourn the unjust and barbaric way in which their lives were robbed. This was our third vigil this month, due to the killing spree the government has been on these past few weeks. We will never stop talking about Datch, Pannir, Hamzah and everyone else whom we have lost to the gallows. In this way, we keep them alive in our struggle to abolish the death penalty. Hamzah bin Ibrahim faces execution this Wednesday. This is Hamzah’s letter to Minister K Shanmugam and President Tharman, sent on his behalf by his niece. The letter highlights the unfairness of Hamzah facing the death sentence despite his cooperation with the authorities, and receiving a Certificate of Substantive Assistance from the Attorney General. Hamzah’s message to the public, as recounted by his niece is: “We have to see with our eyes open, not just trust what the law says.” It is likely that Hamzah’s co-accused will be executed on the same day, in accordance with MHA’s policy. The courts have dismissed Pannir's appeal for a stay of execution. The state informed his family to collect his body at 9am in the morning. Upon receiving news of his execution notice, we had hoped to gather in Hong Lim Park once more to show our solidarity. Only to learn that the singular place we are allowed to legally protest together had been booked out for the whole week. But we refused to let NParks stop us from coming together for Pannir and his family. Tonight, 412 people came together across the island and online to hold vigil for Pannir and show solidarity for the hundreds of other death row prisoners whose lives were taken by the Singapore government. During the vigil, we shared about his legacy as an artist and activist, we held space for our collective grief and rage, read his poems of love and protest, and committed to continue the struggle for a more just world. Pannir's stay of execution hearing was scheduled for 3PM today. At around 2.30pm, the hearing details disappeared from the screen, replaced by the words “no hearing scheduled”. The last visit with Pannir that the family has is from 2-4PM today, 7 Oct. His sister, Sangkari, had rushed down from prison to attend the court hearing. With the last-minute cancellation, Pannir’s family is left to suffer with the anxiety and confusion of not knowing why his hearing was vacated.
