recap of the last week
me, being the maverick i am, decided to email the leading partner directly, asking whether there are any available opportunities. because who needs open vacancies and HR contacts right? (i couldnt find them)
shared my background, shared my plans and all the cute corporate-friendly charm.
thought that he would just ignore but nah, he wrote he liked my ambitions (yay✨) and will forward my details to the HR manager.
and guess what? they reached out.
and so i got an internship for my summer.
lesson: take the shots.
and yeah, can’t tell exactly which but it is one of the biggest consulting firms😌
then
yesterday (25.11.25, looks pretty) we organized the QS Euroasia Forum 2025. big event. ministers and ambassadors and rectors from different countries.
were there from early morning till late evening - felt like serving at a wedding lol. we had to be there as part of the Research Center responsible for the ranking actually.
and guess what
today met up with Jahongir Artikhojayev cuz apparently he wanted to see the people behind this achievement✨
went there with our team of 5-7. sat, ate chocolate and drank coffee and talked about taking over the world.
no okay but really. talked about the plans for the university. and uzbekistan.
and as i said before, if there is one thing that i truly respect about this person is how bold he is. bold ideas with immediately execution. doesn’t care whether its gonna work out or not until he tries. and yeah, thinks big. indeed.
ah and also got my SAT score (retook). finally got the target one. don’t ask why i need it. i just do.
anyway
a nice week!

woah, didn't expect that from an american politician.
Mamdani is indeed a legend with guts, no wonder everyone's talking about him

a bear hug is like a tough love
in relationships, that would be a rough form of affection.
in share markets, it is a hostile takeover through generous offer for the stock price.
was watching Succession (Netflix series) a few days ago, where the family company was fighting against such a hostile leveraged takeover.
a bear hug is basically when a a bidder (like Kendall with Stewy/Sandy) offers to buy the target company at a massively inflated price directly to the board of directors, way above market valuation. meaning, they ask you to give up your company for a very generous price.
now, why can't you simply say no and move on running your company?
you cannot ignore it because, well, the shareholders would benefit from this deal. the price of the stock is going to rise up immediately, offering a nice return on their investments.
if you reject the offer, you risk being sued for violating fiduciary duty (duty to act in shareholders’ best interest).
if you accept it, however, you are handing over your company to the bidder.
what's the benefit for the bidder to offer such a high price?
for one, it prevents someone else from acquiring the company.
and two, if it is a private equity company, they will probably just leverage or break it up and sell assets.
but what's the most interesting part here is that bear hug is usually done through Leveraged Buyout (LBO).
this is when the bidder borrows a ton of money (often billions) from a bank or elsewhere to finance the takeover. usually using the target company’s own assets and future cash flows as collateral.
basically
they will buy your company... using your company's money.
they spend as little of their own money as possible, they risk almost nothing, but they take the profit. and if anything goes wrong and the company fails, the creditors will take the company, employees lose jobs and the shareholders get burned. what about the bidder? they just move on to their next project.
this is fun because one might think that the wealthy is wealthy from their earned money and that they use that earned money to buy stuff.
but nah.
its usually
use borrowed money → buy assets → let the assets pay the debt.
use as little of your own cash as possible. why bother when you can use other people's money?
whereas most people:
use their salary to buy things
own nothing
pay max taxes
take zero leverage
and use debt only for consumption (the worst kind)
it’s two different games entirely.

this is called met up with a friend
i was aiming for 20k at most - ig overdid a bit ahahah
a week ago while coming back from hometown, my brother was sharing some of his american professor's stories on how corporations with resources and legal access play by different rules to avoid accountability in distress.
one could remember the case of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) dodging thousands of lawsuits that claimed that its talc-based products (like Johnson’s Baby Powder) contained asbestos and caused cancers like ovarian cancer and mesothelioma.
to manage those liabilities, J&J emploted a financial strategy known as "Texas Two-Step."
simply put, you split your company into two (divisive merger), where one retains the majority of assets and operations, while the other takes all the lawsuit related liabilities and minimum of assets. then, you take and put all the blame on the second company (the daughter company) and file for bankruptcy protection. the main company is saved, while the daughter one can go sinking with all the headache.
the subsidiary for J&J was LTL Management LLC that took all the blame and in October 2021 filed for bankruptcy.
surely, the moral and ethical dimensions here are messy: victims argue this avoids full accountability, the company argues it’s a fair way to handle thousands of cases efficiently.
in the end, the court dismissed the filing.
but in any case, it's a good micro-example of how in the corporate world, survival is mostly about knowing the system well enough to bend it without breaking it.
i tell you what, we must normalize 5am winter morning walks
pitch dark and chilling cold
tho ahahah
at least helps you not to feel like a sloggy bag of mess
it’s a bit cold in the morning to actually get up from bed yet so here i am
here to remind you that even people that you see as the most gregarious, confident and enthusiastic probably felt vulnerable, uncomfortable and/or frustrated before showing up.
sometimes (okay, oftentimes) i end up saying “why the fck do i have to do this to myself?” following the shiny fanciful anticipation of new opportunities.
started a certain new research program? great. now you have to show up for sessions and talk with your students even when you feel like shit.
agreed to assist a professor with their research while having a couple of papers ongoing of your own?
great. now be ready to hurt your eyes on your laptop at night because this also requires a certain degree of commitment.
the point is, how you feel at the moment can never reflect the eventual outcome and satisfaction you get from your efforts.
so, if you feel like questioning your own reasoning for even starting this endeavor, that’s okay.
you’re fine.

«Goldman Sachs tackled the “most important question for the U.S. equity market outlook” on Monday: whether the market is “correctly valuing the benefits from AI.” The answer is a qualified yes, a denial that company valuations are at “bubble levels,” and a finding that the market is, shall we say, excessively optimistic.
While Goldman’s portfolio strategy team maintains that company valuations are high but not yet at “bubble levels,” a macro approach helps set constraints on “what is collectively possible.” »
Taken from Fortune magazine
Ilya Fushman, Kleiner Perkins partner, said that “every technology cycle, by definition, is a bubble.”
——
so apparently
markets aren’t in full bubble mode yet, but the optimism is clearly running on caffeine and ambition.
the actual test here is whether the fundamentals can eventually catch up to the hype.
let’s see who actually delivers and who’s just coasting on the narrative. only a few companies will get massive in such a rush
remember the 1920s’ radio boom and the 1990s’ dot com internet mania?
the investors aggregated the success of a few giants and projected it onto everyone.
in the end? trillions lost in market value after the 2000 bubble burst.
innovation was real
expectations were delusional

didn’t go to university today
woke up. felt bad. lay for 30 mins thinking why would i even. all that “what’s the point of it all” nonsense ahahahah
actually my head was aching but that’s not the point.
i went to dad’s office. he works as a manager of a certain UNDP project, so thought this might be a good exposure to some real work life (although i work too) instead of university’s polished world of theory.
found this lil cute cup that we gave to him years ago.
also found this unusual brochure by UNDP about the effects of colonialism on Uzbekistan and its culture of “life is better abroad” AND its current transition with the rapid youth growth and social developments.
in short
full day with dad😌

this week’s highlights
my inner child was healed when my brother took me out for a walk a few days ago✨
he came to visit me in the evening, and we went to eat out, in korean style.
that’s basically when you go to one place for the main meal, to another for a dessert and yet another for an ice cream or a drink.
plus 2 hours talk about everything in the world.
protect your study/work times with vehemence, but treat occasional hang out times with close people as a necessity unless you’re in your lock-in season.
once was talking with a girl, the daughter of one big company’s director lets say. busy father, that’s for sure.
but even so, she told they always make sure to have a family breakfast all together in a nice cafe every Saturday morning. a good tradition indeed. after all, that’s what your children will hold on to as childhood memories, won’t they?

say what you will, but this perfectly aligns with my observations.
thoughtfullness and reflections are always welcomed, but those who use them as an excuse to alienate from others simply wont admit that sometimes you have to get real and start working on your own problems.
get the job done.
take it easier.
know the balance.
life's complicated as hell without you eating up yourself.
esp true for guys
that slow, simmering excitement for your own life
that’s the purest intoxication there is.
Benjamin Graham, an american economist, once said smth along the lines:
“the investor’s chief problem, and even his worst enemy, is likely to be himself.”
so
just a reminder that not everything will always go as planned or as you wished
and that’s okay
the point is to get up faster and keep on moving instead of dwelling✨
