IELTS Reading Practice - National Kissing Day
National Kissing Day is celebrated on 22 June each year. The day encourages people to show affection to those they care about, including partners, family members and even pets. Kissing has been part of human culture for thousands of years and is used for many different reasons.
Although many people associate kissing with romance, it has also been used as a greeting and a sign of respect. In some cultures, people kiss each other on the cheek when they meet. Another famous example is the Blarney Stone in Ireland. According to tradition, people who kiss the stone may receive the gift of eloquence, which means speaking confidently and persuasively.
Throughout history, kissing has sometimes been connected to power and loyalty. In medieval times, some people kissed the feet of rulers to show respect. Others kissed a ring belonging to an important religious leader, such as the Pope.
Today, scientists believe kissing may have health benefits. Research suggests that kissing can reduce anxiety and lower blood pressure. It also causes the body to release chemicals called endorphins, which help people feel happier. National Kissing Day reminds people to reconnect with loved ones and appreciate the positive feelings that a simple kiss can bring.
