The surrender took place before the population of Skopje, who joyously welcomed its liberation from the Serbian yoke.
In his farewell speech to the residents of Skopje, General Lindemann said:
WITH A HEAVY HEART I LEAVE LIBERATED MACEDONIA!!!
He knew very well that Macedonia had been under the Serbian yoke.
