| 18 | A Story of the Tower of Babel
You may know the story of the tower of Babel. This was a tower that the ancient Babylonians built in Mesopotamia.
The people of Babylonia were rich and powerful. They were also happy. They loved each other and they enjoyed working together But one thing was lacking. Men had only the Earth to enjoy. God kept Heaven for himself and his angels.
The king of Babylon decided that his people should have Heaven as well as the Earth. So he ordered them to build a great, tall tower Six hundred thousand men began making bricks and mixing mortar and piling up a building, higher and higher.
All day men carried bricks and mortar up a stairway. This went on for forty-two years until the tower was twenty-seven miles high. It was so high that it took a whole year to carry bricks from the ground to the top.
Now the tower had risen nearly to Heaven, and God saw that he would have to do something to keep the invaders out. Perhaps if he made it hard for people to co-operate they could not finish the tower. To carry out this plan God sent seventy angels down to the earth. The angels had orders. First, take away the one language everybody understood; then split people up into groups, with each group speaking a new tongue of its own.
In no time the men who made bricks could not talk to the men who carried them and the men who carried bricks could not say an understandable word to the men who laid the bricks in the tower. A foreman in charge of carpenters could not give orders to the men under him. Everything was a mess, and everybody blamed everybody else for not understanding. Work came to a dead stop. The builders went away, far away, carrying their new languages with them.
That is how it happened that different tongues are spoken in different parts of the world. Such is the myth. But what really happened? Let's go back to the beginning and take another look at what went on when men invented speech.
At that time people had to live in small family groups because food was scarce. Whenever a family grew so large that there was not enough food around the group split up. Some of its members went off in search of a new hunting ground. Over and over again families divided, until people lived in every part of the world.
When two groups lived away from each other for a while, they began to talk differently. Perhaps the people in one group discovered plants and animals they had never seen before. New names for these new things had to be made up. Perhaps new members of the other group met strangers and borrowed strange words from them.
Name-changing, word-borrowing, experimenting with language went on among tribes everywhere. And so hundreds and thousands of languages slowly came into the world. Speech which had begun as a kind of bridge between people often became a wall that kept them apart. | 18 |
