The bar charts compare the percentage of Australian men and women in terms of employment between 1985 and 2014. The information is broken down to three age categories.
In 1984, 60% of females aged 15-19 was employed, just slightly higher that that of 35-44 age bracket, whereas the elderly age group (50-64) accounted for only 10%. While the former held steady without any change, the figures for other age categories increased noticeably, with the percentage of those aged 35-44 reaching a chart high of 80%, and the elderly group rising to 40%, doubling the gap between the two.
With regard to men, 35-44 age bracket had the highest level of employment in all three years. 80% of this age category was employed and that did not change as did women`s figure which was for 15-19 year olds. While 60% of males who were at their 10s was working in 1984, but this had declined by 10 percentage points by 2014, the figure for those aged 50-64 showed an increase from 40% to 60% over the period.
Overall, it appears that older women registered an increasing trend in terms of employment, with the figure for 35-44 overtaking the other two age groups. It is also clear that in both females and males, there was a stability, albeit with different age brackets.
