TASK2: Prison is the best punishment for criminals. To what extent do you agree or disagree? It is essential to penalize offenders for the crimes they commit, and there is a view that imprisonment is the best way to punish them. While I do believe that the rationale behind sentencing criminals to prison is logical, it may not be appropriate for all types of crime. Prison is a universally used method to punish criminals for several reasons. For one, the time they spend inside prison gives offenders time to realize their mistakes, which can guarantee a better future for the ex-offenders as it is unlikely that they are going to turn back to crime once they get out of prison. For another, the atmosphere inside prisons is not the same as the outside world in a way that it is much more challenging to live inside prisons. That's because of the way inmates are treated, which is usually rough and disrespectful. As a result, this creates a notion that whenever one commits a crime, they will lave to lead a miserable lifestyle inside prison where they are not treated well. This may motivate them to stay away from crime. However, imprisonment is sometimes not an appropriate penalty depending on the situation. One case where that is true is when petty crime, such as a small robbery, is committed. In this situation, it would be better to fine the robber more than the value of the robbed property, to demotivate people from turning to crime. Although one could argue that imprisoning still works in this case, I object to it by saying that people could learn better if they were fined 2000 dollars for the item they stole which is worth 1000 dollars, instead of being put in a prison from which they can get out of in a short period without big financial losses. Furthermore, I think it is better to use extreme solutions when extreme offences have been committed rather than just sentencing to prison. One good example can be murder; if one murders another, it would be unjust if authorities only jailed the murderer. If that happened, the close people to the victim would suffer distress. On top of that, the act of only imprisoning a murderer would be the cause of murderers increasing in numbers. Under this circumstance, I believe that capital punishment is the only appropriate way of punishing such criminals, as in this case, someone who took a life would be paying back with their own life. In conclusion, it is true that prisons serve as a great place where offenders realize, and learn from their mistakes; it is not a proper punishment when the types of crime committed is minor or too extreme.
