I think when the Bible speaks about guarding the heart, it’s talking about being careful with what we allow to take root within us.
Everything we repeatedly think about eventually starts to produce feeling. Those feelings influence our desires, our reactions and eventually the way we act.
So guarding your heart isn’t about closing yourself off from the world. It’s about paying attention to what you keep feeding within yourself, because whatever you allow to live within you long enough will eventually find a way of expressing itself through your life.

This verse goes a lot deeper when you look at it psychologically.
You can literally have two different wills fighting inside of you. One part of you knows exactly what you should be doing, but another part wants comfort, pleasure, distraction or the easy way out.
This is why knowing better doesn’t always mean you do better. You can know exactly what needs to change and still find yourself repeating the same things.
A lot of the battle is just becoming aware of which voice inside of you is actually making your decisions.

Most people dont control their thoughts, they obey them.
A thought appears and suddenly it becomes an emotion. The emotion becomes an urge. The urge becomes an action. Repeat that enough and it becomes your character.
To take a thought captive means there is something within you capable of standing above thought and observing it before obeying it.
You are not every voice that speaks inside your mind.
The real question is, which ones have you been allowing to rule you?

To not conform to the world means do not give your soul to the external world and build your entire identity around it. Your money, body, status, possessions and even the roles you play are things you experience, they are not what you are.
We are here to experience the world, learn through it and grow through it, not lose ourselves in it.
The world is something the soul passes through. The danger is becoming so identified with the experience that you forget the one experiencing it.

Never forget this. Learn to consciously direct these four bodies, because understanding how they operate together is one of the most powerful forms of self-knowledge you can ever possess.

When Jesus Tells the Man to Stretch Out His Hand
When Jesus enters the synagogue, He meets a man whose hand has withered. Jesus does not move the man’s hand for him. He commands, “Stretch forth thine hand.” The man acts upon the command, and his hand is restored.
Esoterically, the withered hand represents the part of us that has stopped acting because the mind has convinced us that we cannot. Fear, doubt and past failure create a voice within the mind that says, “Don’t try,” “You’ll fail again,” or “You’re not capable.”
Christ represents higher awareness observing these limitations without accepting them as truth. The command to stretch represents the will acting despite what the mind has been conditioned to believe.
The man could not discover his strength by continuing to believe in his weakness. He had to act beyond the limitation his condition presented to him.
You strengthen the will every time you stop asking the mind for permission to act.
