‘ILM, TALAQQI, AND ASANID In a recent class with students of the Hanafi Legal Code Program (HLCP) at the @IrshadCentre, we discussed the proper method of seeking sacred knowledge, namely, fiqh al-talaqqi. There is a proper method to attaining unto sacred knowledge, and when this is omitted, students acquire knowledge with their [untrained] mind, through the pushes and pulls of the algorithm or what’s popular, without guidance, and without asanid. All of this results in the acquisition of disconnected factoids devoid of any spiritual impact or light because the conditions and integrals of sound acquisition were cast aside. Knowledge is a light which passes from one heart to the next. Sufyan al-Thawri and others remarked: “They were only deprived from reaching because of their abandonment of the foundations.” May Allah Most High show us the way and grant us tawfiq.

On Commanding the Good and Forbidding the Evil, summarized from Imam al-Bajuri’s commentary on Jawharah al-Tawhid: The obligation of commanding the good and forbidding the evil has conditions [meaning the default is that it is required but it is subject to the following conditions]: 1- For the person to know the ruling on what they are commanding or forbidding. For this reason the average person is not required to do so on those things they don’t know well. As for those things that have a ruling that is known to all, then the scholar and others are the same regarding it. 2- To be confident that their action won’t lead to a greater harm. In the absence of these two conditions it is forbidden to command the good or forbidding the evil. 3- There’s a difference of opinion as to when they are unsure if, or confident that, their advice will not be received. In that case, does it remain obligatory or does it become permissible? Scholars differed. And Allah knows best.

“Kindness is a supreme treasure and virtue. Don’t let ingratitude deter your good deeds. True kindness requires three elements: humility in your actions, discretion in their delivery, and promptness to maximize their impact. By belittling your kindness, you magnify its value; by concealing it, you perfect it; and by hastening it, you allow others to fully enjoy and appreciate it.” - Sayyidna Ali ibn Abi Talib in “The Book of Great Quotes.”

TEACHERS OF NASIHA “The sign of a well-wishing teacher is that he is not greedy for what people possess, he draws the poor near, he is gentle in his instruction, he is humble and caring towards his students, and he begins teaching them that which they are most in need of in their lives.” — Abu al-Baqaʾ Ahmad b. al-Diyaʾ al-Qurashi (d. 854)

“Corruption comes when faith is found only in mosques, wealth with misers, weapons with cowards, and authority with fools.” - Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, “The Book of Great Quotes.”

“O God, I am indeed harsh, so make me gentle; I am weak, so make me strong, and I am miserly, so make me generous.” - Umar ibn al-Khattab, mentioned in “The Book of Great Quotes.”

“If I was afflicted by a headache while studying Shaykh Zakariyya Al-Ansari would tell me, ‘Intend healing through knowledge.’ So I would do so and it would go away.” - Imam Abd al-Wahhab al-Sha’rani

«الفضيلة الأصلية في الدنيا بالعلم دون الولاية؛ إذ الله تعالى ما ألزمَ الملائكةَ فضلَ آدم بجعله خليفةً في أرضه، ولكن بما خصه من علمه». أبو زيد الدبوسي

“The default virtue in this life is through knowledge not authority. When Allah gave rank to Adam over the angels He didn’t do so because he was the khalifa but because of the knowledge that He had given him.” - Abu Zayd al-Dabusi

Sayyida Aisha said: Nobody was better in character than the Messenger of God ﷺ. Nobody from his companions or family would call out to him except that he would respond with “Labbayk (At your service)!”

Muhammad Ibn al-Hasan entered the Masjid al-Haram and sat with Sufyan Al-Thawri and faced the ka’bah and said “it has reached me that looking at the ka’bah is ‘ibadah, and looking at the face of your parents is ‘ibadah, and looking at the mushaf is ‘ibadah.” Then Sufyan al-Thawri said, “Yes. And looking at you, and the likes of you, is ‘ibadah.”

Salam Alaykum wa rahmatullah. A quick note on Eid. There are a number of different positions on how to determine the end of the month. These range from local sighting, to global sighting, to calculations for rejecting a not possible sighting only, to calculations for establishing the existence of the moon and the beginning of the month. The last of these was less commonly held traditionally, but does have some precedence. It has also been held by numerous modern scholars. One who holds the first two opinions theoretically shouldn’t be concerned with sightability charts because they don’t use calculations anyways. Their concern would just be a sighting that is accepted by a local authority. It’s also important to note there are discrepancies in sightability charts because they are estimates. If you look at the various ones you will see this clearly. My simple advice is to follow your local community and not worry about it too much. If you don’t know which local community to follow, make that choice, and keep it moving. However we look at it there is only a small amount of time left for us in this blessed month. May Allah accept from us and bring alleviation to the suffering of the oppressed.
