France withdraws support for FIFA president Infantino The French Football Federation has withdrawn its support for Gianni Infantino’s bid for another term as FIFA president, saying trust in the head of world soccer’s governing body has been broken. FFF President Philippe Diallo said the decision was taken unanimously by the federation’s executive committee. Diallo said France had initially backed Infantino in June, when he was the only declared candidate, but that subsequent events had changed the situation. The decision follows criticism of Infantino’s proposal to sell a 20% stake in FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, to private investors. The plan was abandoned in July after opposition from football’s regional confederations. Diallo said the proposal had raised serious concerns over FIFA’s governance and decision-making, particularly because federations had not been properly consulted. England and Italy are among several European federations that have also withdrawn their backing for Infantino. The FIFA presidential election is due to take place in Rabat on March 18, 2027. #FIFA #GianniInfantino #France #Football #FFF #UEFA #Soccer

IAEA board sends Iran nuclear file to UN Security Council The board of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN nuclear watchdog, has passed a resolution reporting Iran to the UN Security Council for the first time in 20 years for breaching its non-proliferation agreement. The last resolution, passed on June 12 2025 - the day before Israel began bombing Iran's nuclear facilities with the United States - found Iran in "non-compliance" with this agreement. Reporting it to the council for that breach required another resolution. #iran #unsc

IRGC extends 'prohibited zone' miles beyond strait of Hormuz A spokesman for Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) Hossein Mohebi has said a new "prohibited zone" would cover waters many miles beyond the Strait of Hormuz and apply to ships as far as the Arabian Sea. Iranian forces have restricted traffic through Hormuz since the start of the war with the United States on February 28. The US has imposed a counter-blockade on Iranian ports. On Tuesday, Iranian forces said they struck 10 vessels that attempted to cross Hormuz without coordination. In the interview with state television, Mohebi further urged the US on behalf of the IRGC to "release $24 billion in Iran's frozen assets, and refrain from any interference in the country's nuclear and missile capabilities". Iran has repeatedly insisted that it will not reopen Hormuz until the US meets its demands. #Iran #US #MiddleEast #IranWar #StraitOfHormuz #GulfOfOman #IRGC

Algeria cuts diplomatic ties with the UAE Algeria announced on Thursday (September 10) that it has decided to sever diplomatic ties with the United Arab Emirates, saying they had "exhausted all means of preserving bilateral relations." Algeria accused the UAE of destabilising, "provocative or hostile" actions.  The two countries have opposing positions on several issues, for example Algeria refuses to establish diplomatic ties with Israel and backs the Polisario Front, which seeks a Western Sahara independent from Morocco. #uae #algeria

Apple launches foldable phone Apple has redefined its flagship smartphone with the launch of a folding iPhone, the Duo, but it comes with a hefty price tag. Priced at $1,999, the Duo could shake up a category long dominated by Samsung whose devices have struggled to move beyond a niche audience. The Duo is sized and shaped like a passport, with rounded edges and a smaller single screen on the front when folded. Apple says it is their thinnest phone however it is still deemed to be thicker than other folding phones. Apple's new CEO John Ternus led the unveiling event, for the most notable overhaul of Apple's flagship product since the iPhone X in 2017. Ternus criticized existing foldables as awkward and poorly suited for common tasks such as scrolling and video viewing, saying the Duo was designed to deliver an iPad-like experience in a pocket-sized device. #apple #duo #iphone

Trump proposes $5,000 dividend for Americans US President Donald Trump said he would pay every American adult a $5,000 “Trump dividend” if Republicans retain control of Congress in November’s midterm elections. Trump made the proposal at the Republican Party’s first-ever midterm convention, but it was not immediately clear how the payments would be funded or whether they would be legally possible. With around 270 million US adults, the plan could cost about $1.35 trillion. Trump is making the midterm elections a personal campaign, telling supporters: “I’m asking you to pretend that I’m on the ballot.” #Trump #US #Midterms #Iran #PickaxeMountain #Politics #Economy

Trump: Iran war will end immediately after midterm elections US President Donald Trump predicted that the war with Iran will end "immediately after" the US midterm elections in November because Tehran was trying to influence the vote but would not be able to hold out more in the face of US economic pressure. "I think war is going to end immediately after the election because they can't hold out any longer. They're desperate to try and affect the election," he told reporters before departing for the Republican National Convention in Dallas. #Trump #Iran #US #Midterms #Oil #StraitOfHormuz #MiddleEast

MOMENT: Iran launches missiles, drones towards US vessels Iran’s military has released video it says shows missiles and drones being launched toward US vessels and oil tankers, in retaliation for the latest American strikes on five Iranian oil tankers. Iranian state media also reported missile strikes targeting US positions in Jordan. Jordan’s military said its air defenses intercepted 18 ballistic missiles, with two others falling in unpopulated areas. No casualties were reported. The latest strikes come after the US said it destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers following two Iranian attempts to attack a US warship with ballistic missiles. Washington and Tehran are also vying for control of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil route that carried around one-fifth of global oil supplies before the war. #Iran #US #MiddleEast #IranWar #StraitOfHormuz #GulfOfOman
