Germany Chancellor Merz says CDU ‘deeply shocked’ by AfD victory German Chancellor Friedrich Merz vowed Monday to press ahead with unpopular economic reforms after the far-right AfD won a regional election in Saxony-Anhalt, putting it within reach of Germany’s first far-right state government since the Nazi era. He said his CDU was “deeply shocked” by its worst election defeat in decades. #merz #afd #saxony #germany #farright

Kremlin Does Not Rule Out Renewed Ukraine Peace Talks The Kremlin said renewed peace talks between Russia, Ukraine and the US were possible, but it was too early to say when or where they might happen. The Alternative for Germany party (AfD), once considered untouchable in German politics, took a decisive win in state elections in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, according to exit polls. This puts a far-right party in reaching distance of power at the state level for the first time since the fall of the Nazis. Read more: https://tinyurl.com/2xxr4j3n  #AfD #Germany #politics

AFD'S Ulrich Siegmund: "We are taking back our country." The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) celebrated in Magdeburg on Sunday after exit polls showed it leading in Saxony-Anhalt’s state election, putting a far-right party on the cusp of power at state level for the first time since World War Two. The party seeks to sharply restrict immigration, restore ties with Russia, leave the euro and promote unashamed German patriotism. #afd #germany #siegmund #saxony-anhalt

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the dismantling of unauthorized settler outposts in the occupied West B
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the dismantling of unauthorized settler outposts in the occupied West Bank, according to the Associated Press, citing two people familiar with the matter. The order applies to outposts established without official authorization from the Israeli state. Israeli website Ynet reported that around 100 outposts could be targeted, although it remains unclear when any operation will begin. The move comes amid pressure from the US over settler violence against Palestinians. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee recently condemned violent settlers as “terrorists” and called for severe consequences. Separately, Israel’s Supreme Court ruled that defense authorities must enable three Palestinian families to safely return to their homes in the West Bank village of Jalud, after they were forced out by settlers. Most governments and UN bodies consider Israeli settlements in the West Bank illegal under international law. Israel disputes this position and says the territory’s status remains unresolved. #Israel #WestBank #Palestine #Settlements

"'Any attack against Iran's interests will receive a faster, heavier and more painful response." Six months into the US-Israel war on Iran, the conflict has reached a stalemate. A ceasefire agreed in June has unraveled. Diplomatic efforts have stalled. And after a pause in fighting through much of August, the strikes are back. US Central Command says it hit three Iranian tankers on Saturday after Iran's Revolutionary Guard launched ballistic missiles at two US Navy ships. Iran said it downed a US surveillance balloon over northern Iraq. The economic toll on Iran is mounting.  Plus more Israeli strikes in Lebanon. As Saxony-Anhalt heads to the polls in an election in which the far-right AfD hopes to take power at state level for the first time in post-war German history, Germany's commissioner for eastern Germany explains why the region has become such fertile ground for the party. When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, mass unemployment followed almost overnight. Wages and savings remain lower than in the west.  Eastern Germans make up a fifth of the population but are still under-represented in politics. And many carry what the commissioner calls a collective memory of "devaluation and loss." The AfD's hostility to migration resonates strongly, even though the east has fewer foreign-born residents than the west. Russian President has ordered a pause on strikes on Kyiv for three days, timed with a visit by US President Trump's envoys Ja
Russian President has ordered a pause on strikes on Kyiv for three days, timed with a visit by US President Trump's envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff. They landed in Moscow on Saturday, and are set to head to Kyiv on Sunday carrying what Trump describes as 'a proposal to end the war.' Ukraine President Zelenskyy accused Russia of striking Kyiv's two airports overnight and a civilian target in the Dnipro region that killed five people, calling the attacks a 'reaction to the preparations' for the envoys' visit. Traveling to Kyiv by plane would be a highly unusual move, with Ukrainian airspace closed since 2022 because of the conflict. Visiting leaders and officials have largely traveled by train. The Kremlin confirmed the order late on Saturday, with the ceasefire taking effect from midnight. #ukraine #russia #moscow #kyiv

Groups of masked men dressed in black disrupted traffic around the English port of Dover on Saturday, blocking major roads leading to the main ferry hub for crossings to France. The protesters, some wearing balaclavas, chanted “Stop the boats” in reference to asylum seekers arriving on England’s south coast in small boats from France. Police said officers were at the scene and engaging with protesters. The road blockages caused disruption during the morning, but access to the port had been restored by around midday, according to the Port of Dover and P&O Ferries. Successive UK governments have struggled to reduce the number of people making the dangerous Channel crossing in overcrowded inflatable boats. However, government figures cited by the BBC show that 16,513 people had arrived by small boat between January 1 and September 1 this year — around 43% fewer than during the same period in 2025. #Dover #UK #Protest #ChannelCrossings #Migration #France

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron to Downing Street for talks focused on migration, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and Britain's future relationship with the European Union. The visit makes the French President the first leader of an EU country to visit Downing Street for talks with Burnham since he became prime minister in July. Burnham described France as Britain's nearest neighbor and close friend, saying cooperation between the two countries was already delivering results on Ukraine and migration. As many as 83 people may have died aboard a boat rescued off Spain's Canary Islands, amid conflicting accounts of the death toll. Maritime rescue authorities said on Thursday that five had died, while a migrant rights group reported that survivors said dozens more had died during the crossing. Helena Maleno, founder of the NGO Walking Borders, said on social media that survivors reported that 83 people, including three women and a baby, had died during the crossing. The boat had left The Gambia 27 days earlier. The Atlantic route from West Africa to the Canary Islands is one of the world's deadliest crossings for migrants fleeing poverty, conflict and persecution. The long journey from West Africa to the Spanish territory of the Canaries is extremely dangerous due to rough seas, strong currents and the often ramshackle, overloaded vessels. 'Heavier, more extensive response': Iran sends warning to Trump Iran's military spokesman condemned US strikes on southern Iran, saying they had killed civilians. In a televised statement, Ebrahim Zolfaqari added that Iran will continue retaliatory attacks against U.S. targets and warned of a heavier response if Washington's actions continued. His comments come after the US military said late on Tuesday it completed its latest wave of strikes on Iran, saying it struck Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets as the Iran war escalated following a weekend exchange of fire. Iran retaliated on Tuesday to the barrage of US strikes, as the exchange marked the most serious escalation in weeks. #Iran #USA #Jordan #MiddleEast #Trump
