Mahmoud Khalil’s arrest is an escalation in U.S. repression against the Palestine movement. But the response to his case has exposed a dangerous trap—one that risks undermining the fight against repression rather than strengthening it. A thread by Nerdeen Kiswani: 🧵 "Before I get to explaining this, it must be noted Gaza is being completely overshadowed. For 11 days, Palestinians have been starved, denied food, water, and electricity during Ramadan. Dozens have been murdered in the last few days alone. But where is the same outrage? The same Democrats and liberal Zionists who supported the genocide in Gaza are now suddenly “concerned” about Mahmoud’s case. Not because they care about Palestine—but because it fits their agenda in an election year. Be wary of repeating their rhetoric. Mahmoud was arrested because he was part of a movement fighting against genocide. But where was this urgency for Gaza? For the past 2 weeks, Palestinians have been starved, denied food, water, and electricity during Ramadan. And the people rallying for Mahmoud now? Silent. Meanwhile, Palestinians and allies who have been repressed for decades—Rasmea Odeh, the Holy Land Five, the LA 8—were demonized, not defended by some of the very people backing Mahmoud today actively participated in that demonization. Many of the loud voices defending him are political opportunists. People who are fine with Gaza being starved and bombed, fine with criminalizing protests—until Trump’s ICE got involved. They are not our allies and should not be welcomed. The focus on Mahmoud as the “perfect victim”—a green card holder, top student, with no criminal record or radical affiliations—has made him an easy rallying point. But the question is: what happens when the next person targeted doesn’t meet that standard? We’ve seen this play out before. If the movement only fights for those deemed most sympathetic, we help the state draw a line between who is “defensible” and who isn’t. That line will keep shrinking until only the most sanitized, apolitical support for Palestine is tolerated. You cannot defend Mahmoud by working with those abandoning Gaza. You cannot separate his abduction from the repression he was fighting against. If you truly stand for him, you must stand for the cause he was fighting for. The radical militancy of the Palestine movement should be at its height, rather than collaborating with mainstream elements that do not care about Palestine. Their playbook is to isolate people & pick them off one by one. If we only defend the easy cases, we help them do it. Instead of treating Mahmoud’s case in isolation, we must build power: •Reject the state’s framework of “good” vs. “bad” activism •Expose how repression here is tied to genocide in Gaza •Fight for sanctuary campuses & divestment as a real offensive strategy—not a reaction This moment has to be about ensuring that no Palestinian—here or in Gaza—can ever be targeted like this again. Anything less, and we are helping the state set the terms for how Palestine solidarity is allowed to exist in this country. And we know where that road leads. The U.S. has spent decades criminalizing Palestine activism. We won’t win by playing their game but by refusing to comply with frameworks that justify our repression. Mahmoud deserves to be free, so does every Palestinian starved and bombed in Gaza. We fight for all of them."

As part of the continuous attacks against Palestinian activists in the West, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) agents arrested Mahmoud Khalil yesterday, a Palestinian activist and recent graduate student at Columbia University, at his place of residence, an apartment building owned by the university. Today, activists in solidarity with Khalil launched a petition demanding his release from ICE custody. The petition can be found at https://shorturl.at/Lm86S. The DHS agents said that the U.S. Department of State had revoked Khalil’s green card. The arrest comes on the heels of the Department of State’s announcement that it plans to deport students affiliated with pro-Palestine protests. The student, who is Palestinian, is a lawful permanent resident of the United States. At approximately 8:30 p.m. ET, Khalil and his wife, a U.S. citizen who is eight months pregnant, had just unlocked the door to their building when two plainclothes DHS agents forced their way in behind them. The agents initially refused to identify themselves, instead asking Khalil to confirm his identity before detaining him without explanation. The agents proceeded to threaten his wife, telling her that if she remained by his side, they would arrest her too. An activist familiar with Khalil’s solidarity work said, “Mahmoud is foundational to our community. The state has escalated its repression of student opposition to the U.S.-backed genocide in Palestine, in which Columbia and all American universities are complicit.” Despite the chilling effect of this repression, the activist said that students “will keep fighting for Palestinian liberation and against state violence.” The full article can be accessed here.

🚨 The Big Ben in London, Britain, was locked down after a man climbed several meters over the tower holding a Palestinian flag and a Kuffiye. The man has been over the tower for several hours now, refusing to step down. He is asking for an end to police violence against protesters demanding for justice for Palestinians and freedom for Palestine. The young man called for the release of members of Palestine Action as 18 members of Palestine Action are currently imprisoned in the UK government's jail under counter-terrorism laws. The activists are accused of causing millions in damages to occupation weapons trade operations.

If we abandon our political prisoners we abandon ourselves—Palestine shows us why, by D. Musa Springer “Most of the time, the people inside the banks weren’t afraid at all,” former political prisoner Jihad Abdulmumit tells me, describing the experience of doing ‘bank expropriations’ to gain funds for the Black Liberation Army during the 1970s. “In fact we would receive rounds of applause and cheers a lot of the time from the bank customers, sometimes the bank tellers too,” Abdulmumit says. “One time I remember we dropped some of the cash and a customer on the ground eagerly helped us put it back in the bag!” The Black Liberation Army (BLA) emerged as an underground organization, waging guerilla warfare in response to the U.S. imperialists’ bloody assault on Black liberation. Composed of former Black Panther Party and Republic of New Afrika members forced to take their work underground, the BLA was a logical response to the FBI’s monstrous COINTELPRO operation, which waged brutal, bloody, all-out war on every aspect of the Panthers’ movement. As Panthers across the country were being assassinated, framed, incarcerated, maligned in the media, and hunted by armed agents of the colonial state, the extreme violence by the imperialists had to be met with a material response—not victimhood.... When the people know without a doubt that your acts of resistance are on the behalf of their liberation, he tells me, then they will support you. This is why his comrades and him would receive ovations of applause inside the banks. Jihad would eventually be caught and serve 23 years in federal prison, but he “thought of escape, revolution, and liberation” every single day. The problem, however, was that Jihad and his comrades were not the illusive “perfect victims” as Mohammed El-Kurd explains in his new book, Perfect Victims and the Politics of Appeal. As El-Kurd illustrates the many ways that Palestinians must make appeals to “humanity” and fit into a narrow category of ‘perfect, peace-loving citizens’ to be humanized, these Black liberation fighters, too, failed the categories of victimhood. As such, they received virtually no support from the wider movement around them. There were no legal defense teams ready to work pro bono for their release, no sweeping movements in the streets to demand the liberatory bank robbers’ freedom, and few comrades of the movement, even, that wanted to associate with the image of an armed insurgent cast behind bars. Contrasted with the popular global outcries for academic temporary political prisoner Angela Davis, the framed Panther 21 in New York, and other ‘above ground’ activists, Jihad says that many BLA comrades were on their own those initial years of imprisonment... Under a fundamentally racist, colonial, and genocidal system, the conditions of imprisonment are inherently political. If we don’t build a movement strong enough to bring them home, we signal to the state that its war on Black liberation has worked—that prisons have broken our backs and souls. What the Palestinians have done, above all, is to make the prison struggle a popular struggle; one that saturates the mainstream and the popular consciousness of most Palestinians. We have ultimately failed to do the same. The Palestinian movement also makes it clear: a revolutionary movement that abandons its political prisoners abandons itself. Struggle brings repression, and for those who truly dare to fight for freedom, prison is perhaps as inevitable as death. It is suicidal to not see ourselves reflected in the faces of our political prisoners and organize accordingly.

The Revolution Will Not Be Signaled The Mapping Project just released this article reflecting on the dangers/limitations of Signal and digital communications in general: We are constantly told that the messaging platform Signal is totally secure and benevolent. While Signal may be preferable to the dominant alternatives now, there are serious concerns that organizers should discuss and further study. These include: (1) Signal’s extensive ties to the state and major corporations, (2) Signal’s extractive and anti-democratic corporate model, and (3) Signal’s technical dependence on companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon, which could open it up to surveillance or censorship. Because Signal gets such glowing coverage, these concerns are rarely raised. The common wisdom that Signal is invulnerable gives many people a false sense of security. Beyond these concerns, we should ask ourselves if the increasing use of tools like Signal harms our abilities to organize and communicate in-person, which can be not only more secure but better for building community and enabling direct action... Radical action requires relationships. What ways of communicating would be best for building community, deepening our relationships to one another, and grounding us in a sense of place? Sometimes “low tech” methods such as phone trees can be better for all these things than impersonal digital messaging. We should consider all these factors when using Signal, and critically discuss the political forces that produced this tool. We shouldn’t let the discussion be guided by technologists or the elite activists of the nonprofit-industrial complex, but by what our movements need to build the community power that can topple imperialist institutions. No new Queens cop training facility, no new jails, no more police murders, no collaboration with deportation. Forever conflict with the security guards of wealth and genocide.
