📈Good morning. The BOJ holds rates, signaling no hurry for hikes. China may remove some of the largest remaining restrictions on home purchases. And a “Doomsday” glacier is set to melt faster.
🇯🇵The BOJ kept borrowing costs unchanged at 0.25% in a sign it’s not in a hurry to hike after the move in July. The yen edged higher as investors awaited Kazuo Ueda’s press conference.
🇨🇳China may remove some of the largest remaining restrictions on home purchases, people familiar said. Plans include allowing mega cities such as Shanghai and Beijing to relax curbs for non-local buyers. Property shares climbed.
🇺🇸The global stock rally extended gains after the S&P 500 hit its 39th record of the year. US and European futures dipped. Meanwhile Larry Summers said inflation will probably prevent the Fed from lowering rates as much as expected in the coming years.
🇩🇪Germany’s economy will only start growing again toward year-end, while narrowly dodging a recession before that.
- Respondents in a Bloomberg survey forecast stagnation in the three months through September, compared with 0.2% growth in a previous round. They see GDP rising at that pace in the final quarter—down from 0.3% before.
- Europe’s biggest economy has been in the spotlight after falling behind its regional peers—mainly owing to a prolonged manufacturing downturn. Martin Belchev at FrontierView cautions it still isn’t out of the woods.
