Monster Energy HISTORY
Unbound Energy originated around 2004 at Hansen Natural Corp. (the company that was later renamed Monster Beverage Corp.). During that period, Hansen was looking for ways to capture the energy drink market and did not want to put all its eggs in one basket.
Strategy and Positioning
* The "Value" / Budget option: Monster Energy was the premium flagship. Unbound was launched as an affordable alternative to serve the lower end of the market and prevent cheaper brands from gaining ground.
* Brand Identity: Hansen did not want to associate Monster with a budget drink. Unbound was therefore given its own industrial look with the recognizable flaming "U" and the slogan "The Rules Have Changed!". There was no Monster logo on the can; distribution was handled in the background through Hansen subsidiaries such as Juicy Whip Inc.
