Harlan County, Kentucky in 1946. Frank Sergent is hauling “household coal” to his home place on a sledge. The coal mine would designate coal the miners could take home, they would charge them $2.80 a month for it in 1946.

Imagine if we had this… but in Appalachia. We got extensive cave systems already… and those Jews and their little rat tunnels up in NY wouldn’t have shit on some hillbilly ingenuity!!

Panthers are alive and well in Appalachia, I have always wondered why the TWRA (Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency) have denied they are prowling around the hollers. Apparently it is the same with the Georgia DNR (Dept. of Natural Resources) that deny they are there. This photo was taken in Gordon County, Georgia (North Georgia) summer before last. To hear one scream at night, will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

On This Day in 1952 Hank Williams was scheduled to perform at the Municipal Auditorium in Charleston, West Virginia but due to an ice storm in the Nashville area, Williams could not fly, so he hired Charles Carr, to drive him to the concert. When they arrived at the Andrew Johnson Hotel in Knoxville, Tennessee, Williams complained of feeling unwell and saw a doctor. Carr and Williams checked out of the hotel, and at around midnight in Bristol, Virginia, Carr stopped at a small all-night restaurant and asked Williams if he wanted to eat. Williams said he did not, and those are believed to be his last words. Carr later stopped for fuel at a gas station in Oak Hill, West Virginia, where he realized that Williams was dead.

Growing up in the mountains you are heir to a legacy. Ancestors who tamed the land, cut down trees without power tools and built homes without house plans. Growing up in the mountains means you are only a generation or two from having to grow gardens because it was necessary to keep from starving-- not just as a quaint hobby. Grandparents who smoked meat and dried beans for the long winter... And carried water from a stream to cook and wash with... A mountain accent is a blend of old English, Irish and Scottish--a tribute to your heritage. Mountain mothers worked in the fields, tended their young, raised chickens and were masterful cooks. They kept their homes in order, and were usually the moral compass of the family. Mountain fathers worked in the fields, built their own house, made caskets for the deceased and could shoe horses. Mountain people are resourceful, extremely hard working and innovative. They won't cower in safe spaces. They were the originators of dealing with whatever life threw at them. They never expected handouts or thought that they deserved anything.
