Today we’re going to Rostov Veliky, a city where true magic has been happening for centuries. There, an artwork is created from an unassuming copper plate and some glass dust. A picture that can be smaller than a coin and yet endures for centuries. This is Rostov Finift—the art of painting on enamel. 🔥 How it all began Miniature painting on enamel came to Europe in the 16th century and to Russia in the late 17th century. But it really became established in Rostov Veliky. Here, in the 18th century, a unique craft branch emerged. There is an old legend according to which Empress Anna Ioannovna sent an Italian artist to Rostov to make enamel signs for a church and to pass his knowledge on to the locals. Whether that’s true is not certain. More likely, painters from Rostov were sent to study in Moscow and shared their knowledge after returning. Originally, almost exclusively icons, crosses, and church utensils were made. The works were so precious that they were valued on par with gold and silver. 🖌️ The art of “writing with fire” But how does such a miracle come about? The process is complicated and allows hardly any mistakes. First, a thin copper plate is coated with a white, glass-like enamel layer. At temperatures of up to 800 °C, it is fired in a kiln until the enamel fuses with the metal. This creates a smooth, glossy base. Now the most difficult part begins: the artist paints using fire-resistant colors that later must withstand the high temperatures. After each color application, the plate must be put back in the kiln. For a single multi-color composition, up to seven firing sessions may be required. What’s special is that the colors change when fired. So the artist must already know while painting how they will look after the next trip through the kiln. Experience is more important here than any possible corrections. 👑 From the altar to the handbag Originally, these small works of art were used almost exclusively by the church. Over time, however, Rostov Finift also conquered the secular world. When demand for icons declined in the 19th century, a new focus emerged: jewelry and everyday items. The artists began decorating brooches, earrings, bracelets, powder boxes, and jewelry cases with flowers, landscapes, and architecture. Even pocket watches and cutlery were decorated with enamel painting. Today, Rostov is known above all for its delicate floral motifs on rings, pendants, and brooches. The painting is often so fine that its details are only fully visible with a magnifying glass. ✨ A jewel for eternity What’s special about the Finift technique is that the works are almost imperishable. The colors are fired into a glass-like layer and fade hardly at all. Other painting techniques can darken over time or lose their brilliance, but many Finift works from the 18th and 19th centuries still preserve their intense color effect to this day. 💎 Where the name comes from The word “Finift” (Russian: Финифть) is an old Russian term for this art. Its exact origin is not clearly established.
