Welcome to Vyatskoye – Russia’s wealthiest peasant village. 🏘️ A village that called itself a town Vyatskoye was first mentioned in a chronicle as early as 1502. At that time, there were only a dozen houses here. But things were soon to change. The village was one of the largest settlements in the region and became the votchina (hereditary estate) of Patriarch Filaret, the father of the first tsar from the Romanov dynasty. The residents of Vyatskoye were never serfs. They were free, traded, and traveled. And that made them wealthy. 🏛️ The builders of St. Petersburg The real wealth came from working far from home. The men from Vyatskoye went as so-called “otkhodniki” – seasonal workers – to Moscow and, above all, to St. Petersburg. They were in demand as roofers, stove builders, plasterers, and slate roofers. They decorated the palaces, theaters, and hotels of the new capital. Their contribution was so significant that in 1709, one-third of St. Petersburg’s population consisted of workers from Vyatskoye. Even the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedia was so impressed that it incorrectly described Vyatskoye as a “small town.” The streets were paved, the houses were made of stone – and all this in the countryside. To this day, more than 50 architectural monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved in Vyatskoye. 🥒 Russia’s cucumber capital But the true heart of Vyatskoye beats in the vegetable garden. For more than two centuries, the village has been Russia’s cucumber capital. In the 19th century, Russia’s first cucumber artel was founded here. The fields covered more than 150 hectares, and the annual yield sometimes reached 30 million cucumbers.
