It is further stated that on Christmas eve, the Lapps make the cross on their doors, or make said sign with a knife in beer or liquor when they drink, or in a pot of butter. Schefferus in Lapponia also states that the idols of Horagalles were marked with crosses on the chest of the idol with the blood of the sacrifices they gave to the god.

It's always funny how modern pagans ignore two very basal things about paganism: 1- Overall, paganism was not so much about orthodoxy as it was about orthopraxy. This means that our relationship with the gods relied almost exclusively in knowing the rituals by which we would praise them. As long as you partook in those same rituals, it largely didn't matter what other gods you praised. This knowledge, of course, is completely gone after some 1,800 years of Christian hegemony, which means that you're most probably insulting those same gods you claim to worship. I don't really think Mars would be honored by receiving burnt sage and listening to some pothead talking about him in English. 2- As with most barbaric societies, almost everything we know from the daily lives of people outside of Italy and Greece is owed to what Romans and Greeks observed, and I don't really think they really cared about anthropology back then. Even then, most things weren't uploaded to Google Drive back then, and the primary sources for most things are lost to time. This means that there's a 99% chance everything we know about the ancient ways has been embellished by the copyist priests and missionaries who really cared to write down and preserve stuff. So yeah, your current faith is about as legitimately ancient as Mormonism. And I'm writing this while being extremely aware that 9 out of 10 people who claim to be pagans couldn't offer a libation to save their lives. And I speak as someone who used to "worship the old gods" back when I was young, stupid and retarded. Now, thanks to God, I'm just retarded.

I also warn everyone online who has a picture of a saint or God Himself to change your PFP, or radically change your behavior since acting in foolish ways with icons of the holy and beautiful is another sin of impiety. Local christianity today has more in common with both the forms and logic of pre-christian cultus than does neo-paganism, even as practiced by historical reconstructionists.

This is the logical conclusion of any notion whatsoever of an institution of patriarchy. The rural, pre-industrial communities simply used to have their own, local elites and/or had oral traditions which more or less accidentally preserved more or less elite-produced culture. The people as mother and the king as father. Neo-paganism also relies on an inherited Reformed-Christian idea of personal confession, mostly alien to a world existing before 1400 AD. Indeed the neo-pagan movement resembles more or less that of the free churches of the Great Awakening in 19th century America, though most of neo-pagans today are mostly former new atheists, academics unable to seperate themselves emotionally and personally from their field of study, as well as veteran newagers and overly insecure nationalists.
