Successful first day of the Middle East Youth Conference In panels on “War and Crisis in the Middle East and North Africa” & “Crisis in the Middle East, Ways and Means of Women's Struggle” we had the opportunity to sharpen our analysis of the current situation and exchange perspectives from different angles. It is already clear now how important it is, especially for us as youth, to get to know each other and connect our struggles. After a successful first day of the conference, a cultural program provided a fitting conclusion. Tomorrow, the conference will continue with various workshops. The investigative file used to justify this operation is based solely on baseless allegations from the police and the prosecutor. The dismissal of Mr. Akış, who was democratically elected, is a blatant coup against the will of the people of Hakkari, where the majority of the population is Kurdish. The AKP-MHP coalition's attempt to avenge its heavy defeat in the local elections by attacking the DEM party's municipalities means the abolition of the constitutional right to vote and be elected. Judgments by the European Court of Human Rights have shown that the broad and vague definition of “terrorism” as formulated in the Turkish legal system has become a tool used by the government to eliminate its political rivals. It is clear that the Home Office's dismissal of co-mayors and appointment of trustees is completely unlawful. Previously appointed administrators in HDP municipalities have not only sabotaged the will of the Kurdish people, but also generated massive corruption and financial losses. The economic and political destruction caused by the administrators appointed by the AKP-MHP coalition is a major obstacle to the democratization of the country and the democratic solution of the Kurdish question. The fact that this administrator policy has become a sort of standard practice suggests that administrators may be appointed in the near future in municipalities run by all opposition parties, including Istanbul. We would like to emphasize that the appointment of an administrator in Hakkari is not just a “national issue”. Turkey is a member of the Council of Europe and is also negotiating with the EU for full membership. Despite numerous promises of democratization and millions of euros in funding, Turkey's democratic institutions are subject to systematic repression, and elected politicians are exposed to judicial oppression. We call on all pro-democracy communities, parties and international institutions to take a firm stand against this political coup, stand in solidarity with the DEM Party and defend the political will of the people of Hakkari.
