| 11 | Inner Conflict as Part of Culture Shock - How to Cope?
Hi there!🌟
If you’ve been following our series, you already know that adapting to a new country isn’t instant. It’s a journey - one that unfolds in stages. Today, we’re diving deeper into culture shock, focusing on one of its most personal and often overlooked aspects: inner conflict.
What Is Inner Conflict🙋♀️
It’s that quiet, internal struggle that happens when your core values, beliefs, or habits clash - with the new culture around you, or even with yourself.
For example:
• You want to fit in, but fear losing a part of who you are.
• You catch yourself thinking:
"Am I doing the right thing?"
"Should I change to be accepted?"
"Why can’t I just be like I used to?"
These questions can bring confusion, anxiety, or even guilt.
But here’s the truth: this is completely normal.
Inner conflict isn’t a sign you’re failing - it’s a sign you’re growing.
🧠 Why Does This Happen?
Culture shock isn’t just about language barriers, unfamiliar food, or cold weather.
It’s also deeply psychological.
When you enter a new cultural environment, your mind works hard to adapt. But your old beliefs and automatic behaviors don’t just disappear - they resist.
You’re not only learning new social rules - you’re re-evaluating your identity.
And that kind of transformation? It’s rarely comfortable. But it’s powerful.
🛠️ What Can You Do If This Feels Familiar?
1️⃣ Talk to Others Who Get It
Connect with fellow international students or expats.
Sharing your thoughts with people who are going through the same thing can be incredibly healing.
You’re not alone - and sometimes, just saying it out loud helps.
2️⃣Build a “Cultural Bridge”
Share your world with others.
Host a food night, teach a traditional dance, or talk about a holiday from back home.
Celebrating your culture doesn’t pull you back - it grounds you. And it invites others to see and appreciate who you really are.
3️⃣ Practice Self-Reflection
Give yourself space to process:
• Analyze your values: What truly matters to you? Which parts of your identity are non-negotiable?
• Set priorities: What are your key goals right now? Language? Academics? Mental well-being? Focus on one step at a time.
•Keep an adaptation diary: Write down your emotions, small wins, and challenges. Over time, you’ll see how far you’ve come.
🪴 Remember:
Inner conflict isn’t a dead end - it’s a doorway.
It means you’re becoming more flexible, more aware, and more resilient.
You’re learning to live between two worlds - and that makes you stronger.
But if the weight feels too heavy, and self-help isn’t enough - reach out to a counselor or therapist.
Asking for help isn’t weakness. It’s one of the bravest things you can do.
Have you ever felt torn between your old self and your new life? How did you cope?
Share your story in the comments - your experience might be exactly what someone else needs to hear. | 1 608 |

| 13 | Renting an Apartment in Moscow: What International Students Need to Know 🏙️
Moving to Moscow? Exciting! But renting an apartment here comes with rules — especially if you're an international student. Here’s what you really need to know to avoid stress, fines, or getting scammed.
✔️Come prepared — bring all your documents
Be on time and have these ready:
🔵 Passport
🔵 Migration card
🔵 Current registration (migration stamp)
🔵 Certificate of enrollment — you can order it online in your university’s personal account. The e-version is usually ready in 15 minutes!
Be ready to talk about your university, how long you plan to stay, and how you’ll pay rent. Landlords in Moscow are often cautious — it’s not personal. Show that you’re legal, responsible, and serious.
💬 Be honest — who’s actually living in the apartment?
Don’t hide roommates. If someone else will stay with you, tell the landlord. Lying can get you evicted — or worse, lead to legal trouble. Honesty builds trust.
▶️Registration is NOT optional — it’s the law
In Moscow, both you and the landlord can be fined for improper registration.
❗ You cannot be registered by power of attorney — the owner must appear in person at the MVD, MFC, or submit the application via “Gosuslugi” (State Services).
❗ If the landlord lives outside Moscow or rarely visits Russia, make sure they’re ready to handle this. Otherwise, you could end up unregistered — and that’s a serious problem.
📌Your registration must cover your entire stay. Studying for a year? You need a registration slip for that full period (with possible extensions).
✏️ Always sign a written rental agreement
Handshake deals don’t count. A proper contract should include:
— Full names and passport details of both parties
— Exact address, floor, and size of the apartment
— Rental period (must not exceed the validity of your visa/migration card!)
— Rent amount and payment method (cash, bank transfer, etc.)
— Who pays utilities
— Rights and responsibilities (e.g. pets, guests, repairs)
➡️The contract should be in both Russian and English (or your language) to prevent misunderstandings.
💡 Pro tip:
If you’re unsure about the contract or the terms, show it to HSE Student Housing office. They’ll help you check it and flag any red flags.
Renting in Moscow is doable — just stay legal, be upfront, and protect yourself with a solid agreement. Do it right, and you’ll have a safe, comfortable place to call home.☺️

| 16 | Cultural Shock: How to Cope with the Challenges of Adapting to a New Country
Today we’re continuing our conversation about adjusting to life in a new country. After the exciting “honeymoon phase” comes a less pleasant stage — the crisis, or what’s known as cultural shock.
🔵What is cultural shock?
Imagine stepping into a world where everything is different — language, social norms, daily routines, even the way people smile. At first, it feels fascinating. But over time, small frustrations pile up. You start feeling tired, irritable, homesick. You may feel like an outsider.
Cultural shock is a psychological response to encountering unfamiliar cultural patterns and ways of life. It often includes:
🔵Longing for home, family, and old friends
🔵Feelings of isolation and alienation
🔵Anxiety, self-doubt, and emotional exhaustion
🔵Physical symptoms like fatigue or sleep problems
Yes, it can lead to chronic stress — but the good news is: it’s temporary, and it’s manageable.
How to find your way out of this condition?
Focus on three key areas: your body, your emotions, and your thoughts.
Taking care of your body
Your body is often the first to react to stress. Headaches, muscle tension, fatigue — these are signals. Listen to them.
What helps:
Breathing exercises💤
• Extended exhale: Inhale for 1-2-3, exhale for 4-5-6-7-8-9. A longer exhale calms your nervous system.
• Box breathing 4-4-4-4: Inhale — pause — exhale — pause. Simple, but powerful.
Muscle relaxation 🌟
Try the "head movement" exercise: Sit or stand, close your eyes, and slowly, gently rotate your head. Move slowly, searching for comfortable points. The slower you go, the faster the tension releases.
Exercise, sleep, and nutrition
Don’t underestimate the basics. Morning stretches, healthy meals, and 7–8 hours of sleep are not luxuries — they’re fuel for adaptation.
Managing emotions and thoughts 🌟
Emotions aren’t the enemy. They’re messengers. The key is not to suppress them, but to learn how to work with them.
Try these strategies:
🟣Acknowledge your feelings
It’s okay to feel sad, anxious, or angry. Say to yourself: “It’s hard right now — and that’s part of my journey.”
The “worry window”
🟣Set aside 10–15 minutes a day to focus on your worries. Write them down, talk them through, cry if you need to. Then say: “I’ll come back to this tomorrow. For now, I choose peace.”
🟣Reverse visualization of success
Instead of imagining future achievements, look back. Recall a time when you overcame a challenge. What helped you then? This reminds you: You’ve already been strong before.
Mental journey 🌟
When things feel overwhelming, close your eyes and picture a place where you feel safe and calm — your childhood room, a beach, your grandmother’s house. Use this to recharge.
But remember: this is a pause, not an escape.
Step outside your comfort zone🌟
Yes, it sounds counterintuitive — but new experiences bring energy. Attend a student event, try a new hobby, explore a new neighborhood.
Every small step builds your new life.
🪴 The exit is ahead
That soft light at the end of the maze? It’s real. Cultural shock isn’t a failure — it’s a phase of transformation. Many who’ve been through it say: “Now I understand myself better.”
Adaptation isn’t about becoming “like the locals.” It’s about finding yourself in a new world.
Next time, we’ll dive into inner conflicts — when your old self and new self start to clash. Stay tuned!
💬 Share in the comments: Which stage of cultural shock are you going through? What helps you cope?
