🤓Russian useful phrases 🤓 What to Say When You Don’t Understand Someone Sometimes people speak too quickly, you don’t hear something clearly, or you simply don’t understand. Here are some useful Russian phrases you can use in everyday conversation. 💬 Useful Phrases 1. Повтори́те, пожа́луйста. - Please repeat. 2. Что вы сказа́ли? - What did you say? 3. Что́-что́? - What? / Sorry, what did you say? (Very informal and conversational.) 4. Ещё раз, пожа́луйста. - One more time, please. 5. Говори́те поме́дленнее, пожа́луйста. - Please speak more slowly. 6. 🤓Russian Grammar🤓 Gender of Russian nouns Russian Masculine Nouns Exceptions Masculine gender: 1) The grammatical gender of these nouns is determined the biological gender. They may be subdivided into the following groups: - Names of male persons (proper names). There are a few names ending in -a in Russian, and usually names of males end in a consonant or -й. At the same time, most diminutive forms of Russian masculine names will have -а/-я on its end. Никита - Nikita, Russian full name Саша - Sasha, diminutive from Александр - Common nouns that denote male persons. These is a group of originally masculine nouns: дедушка 'grandfather', дядя 'uncle', мужчина 'man', папа 'dad', юноша 'young person'. 2) Indeclinable nouns denoting names of places (toponymes) These are names of geographical places borrowed from other languages. The grammatical gender of these nouns may depend on the gender of Russian generic words denoting the relevant class of places. These nouns include: - Indeclinable names of cities. They are masculine because the generic word город 'city' is masculine in Russian. Калгари - Calgary Гонолулу - Honolulu Сан-Тропе - Saint-Tropez Токио - Tokyo Баку — Baku Осло — Oslo Токио — Tokyo Мехико — Mexico City Сочи — Sochi - Indeclinable names of islands. They are masculine because the generic word остров 'island' is masculine in Russian. Капри - Capri Антигуа - Antigua Корфу - Corfu 3) Nouns denoting animals and birds ending in -е, -и, -o, etc. These are indeclinable words borrowed from other languages. шимпанзе - chimpanzee какаду - cockatoo пони - pony фламинго - flamingo 4) Nouns denoting male persons ending in -е, -и, -o, etc. These are indeclinable words borrowed from other languages. конферансье - compere рефери - referee 5) Indeclinable nouns denoting nonliving objects. Their grammatical gender often depends on the gender of Russian generic words denoting the relevant class. These are words borrowed from other languages that usually require consultation with dictionary to ascertain their gender: кофе - cofee, masculine, but may behave as neuter in colloquial Russian; торнадо - tornado, masculine because the generic word ветер 'wind' is masculine; хинди - Hindi, masculine because the generic word язык 'language' is masculine; пенальти - eleven-metre penalty kick, masculine because the generic word удар 'kick' is masculine. 📚 Want more examples and practice? 🤓Russian Grammar🤓 Gender of Russian nouns Russian has three genders: masculine, feminine, and neuter. In the case of words like “father,” these relate to physical gender. In the case of other objects like “pen”, “cup”, “house”, there is no physical meaning attached to the gender. However, you will still need to know the gender because it affects how words are formed. Luckily, unlike many languages, in Russian it is almost always possible to tell the gender of a noun by its spelling. When you use a noun as the subject of a sentence, it will be in its dictionary form (nominative case). In this form, you can easily work out its gender. If the noun is in another part of the sentence, the ending is changed to suit the case. From the dictionary form of a noun, here is how you can tell what the gender is: 1. Look at the last letter of the word: 2. If it is a consonant, or “й”, the word is masculine. 3. If it is “а” or “я” it is feminine. 4. If it is “о” or “е” it is neuter. 5. If it is a soft sign “ь” then it could be either masculine or feminine.
