Those viral photos of people walking on glass-blue ice are Lake Baikal in winter. And they’re real. Baikal holds more fresh water than all five Great Lakes combined — about one-fifth of the planet’s unfrozen fresh surface water. It’s 1,642 meters deep, 25 million years old, and two-thirds of its species live nowhere else, including the nerpa, the only seal that lives only in freshwater. One drop takes about 330 years to leave.
