And St. Gregory remarks that the hypocrites, blinded by pride and hardened in their sins, generally die impenitent without ever being enlightened, for a reason which is perhaps taken from St. Peter Chrysologus, because while we can see that the remedies to the amendment of other vices do good, the disease of hypocrisy is so pestilential that it affects the very remedies themselves, so that they only serve to foment and increase the evil. “Brethren,” says the Saint, “this pestilence must be avoided that turns remedies into diseases, medicines into maladies, holiness into vice, saintliness into sinfulness.” ~ Fr. He was one of the first to profess the religious life as a Servite, and in time became general of the Order. With his brethren he preached in many countries of Europe, and journeyed even into western Asia to spread the Christian faith. In his humility he refused honors, and even the Papacy, which was offered him by the cardinals assembled in conclave. He entered into the glory of heaven in the year 1285. The Holy Spirit, like a tender father, hearkens to the cry of our heart, and in His infinite bounty sends a ray of heavenly light to illumine our soul, to dispel its darkness, to show it the way it should follow, and to fill it with a sense of security and peace. Born in Florence, Italy, St. Philip became a lay brother and was then ordained Priest in the Servite Order, and then became General of the Order but repeatedly refused the Papacy.
