Even if he take manufacturing, he can take design/thermal related elective courses and build a profile in that area.
He will be able to participate in interviews for design/thermal related roles.

Sir, as you have mentioned Design is better.
So he can wait for next rounds. In manufacturing branch people generally prepare for non core jobs and competitive exams.
