Hi everyone. What Measures Can Be Put in place to Prevent Gambling Addiction? Check out this video to learn some useful vocabulary in context and get ideas for talking about a task like this. https://youtu.be/9W3T3xDtxgY Here's the transcript: 1 - Well, that's an interesting question. I suppose... perhaps communities could initiate a public awareness campaign...? Like, to educate people about the inherent risks[1] of gambling? I don't know. It seems like it might be a good first step, right? 2 - Maybe.I'm not sure if people would really pay attention to them, but it could be something. They could concentrate on promoting responsible gambling behaviours, or maybe on instructing friends or family members about how to support an addict[2]. I'm not entirely sure. 1 - Me neither. Honestly, I've never really thought much about this! I mean, perhaps one approach could be to outright[3] ban gambling. I'm not sure. But, to take action[4] and limit it in some way. 2 - It might prove challenging to implement a blanket ban[5] everywhere. A lot of non-profits and hospitals earn revenue through gambling, such as through lotteries. Additionally, some communities rely heavily on casino profits. That money gets used to better the community. 1 - But perhaps the government could implement and enforce responsible gambling policies and regulations... maybe they could set restrictions on how much people can bet[6]. I'm not sure... Something so people don't lose all their savings through gambling... Hi everyone. CAE Part 4 Question - To what extent does the entertainment we consume shape our identities and worldviews? Check out this video to learn some useful vocabulary in context and get ideas for talking about a task like this. https://youtu.be/Bvlp0CVsTZc Here's the transcript: 1 - I think it has a significant impact. I know so many people who seem to be influenced by the things they see on TV. Also, I think it normalizes[1] certain behaviours or beliefs, such as our attitude towards violence, for example. What are your thoughts on this? 2 - I actually came across[2] an article discussing a study on this topic once. It highlighted how TV and media can influence our prejudices[3]. For instance, there was a popular American TV show... I can't recall[4] the name... it portrayed the police in a favourable light[5] which led people to view them as infallible[6]... they couldn't do anything wrong. Things like that. 1 - I find it hard to believe[7] that one TV show would be responsible for all that... 2 - No, not one. But it contributed to the change... When something is portrayed a certain way across multiple TV shows and movies, it starts to shape public opinion[8]. The media has significant sway[9] over our opinions. 1 - I agree it has an impact, but nowadays I believe social media is more influential. People don't watch TV and movies like they used to and are more likely to have their opinions changed by something they saw online. 2 - I do agree with you there. I know so many people who don't watch TV. The opinion of their social circles[10] makes an impact, too. 1 - Right. Perhaps even more so. It's one thing to watch or read about something online... but it carries more weight[11] when all of your peers[12] begin to adopt those beliefs. Here are the vocabulary notes: [1] to normalize something - to make something seem normal or acceptable by portraying it regularly [2] to come across something - phrasal verb - to find something, usually unexpectedly [3] prejudices - preconceived opinions or attitudes towards a person or group, usually based on stereotypes or incomplete information [4] can't recall something - another way to say you can't remember something [5] in a favourable light - portrayed or presented in a positive way [6] infallible - incapable of making mistakes or being wrong [7] to find something hard to believe - phrase - to have difficulty accepting or believing something [8] public opinion - collocation - the collective opinion of a population [9] to have sway over something - to have influence or control over something [10] social circle - a group of people with whom one regularly interacts [11] to carry more weight - to have greater influence or significance [12] peers - individuals who are similar in age, status, or ability How would you respond to this question? USEFUL ADJECTIVES FOR DESCRIBING TV SHOWS, FILMS, AND BOOKS I 1 ENGAGING /ɪnˈɡeɪʤɪŋ/ It captures one’s attention effectively. "That movie was so **engaging**; I couldn't look away for a second!" 2 COMPELLING /kəmˈpɛlɪŋ/ It evokes a strong sense of interest or fascination. "The novel's plot was definitely **compelling**. I finished the entire thing in one sitting!" 3 ENTERTAINING /ˌɛntərˈteɪnɪŋ/ It’s enjoyable and amusing. "We watched a really **entertaining** comedy last night. It had us laughing non-stop." 4 RIVITING /ˈrɪvətɪŋ/ It holds one’s attention intensely because it is very suspenseful. "I think that a **riveting** novel needs both a good plot and a strong ending that’s not too drawn out." 5 CAPTIVATING /ˈkæptɪˌveɪtɪŋ/ It holds one’s interest because it's charming, beautiful, or powerful. "I recently went to an art show. The paintings were rather **captivating**." 6 INTRIGUING /ɪnˈtriɡɪŋ/ Provoking curiosity or interest. Often there are unusual or mysterious elements. "I think people love mysteries because they are **intriguing** and most people cannot wait to find out what happens next." 7 GRIPPING /ˈɡrɪpɪŋ/ It holds one’s attention because it's exciting or suspenseful. "My favourite movies are thrillers because they tend to be pretty **gripping**."
