Phrases About Making a Living I 1 Feel the pinch To experiencing financial hardship. You may have to save more money than you spend and keep track of even small purchases in order to make it through their rough financial situation. We've been feeling the pinch since my wife's restaurant closed down. 2 Go from rags to riches To go from poverty to prosperity. My father went from rags to riches. He grew up poor but managed to get a job and work his way through school. He runs a successful business enterprise now. 3 Keep your head above water To barely keep up with work or responsibilities in order to survive financially. I always feel like I'm barely keeping my head above water with all this debt. 4 Live beyond your means To spend more money than you can actually afford. You probably also have a lot of debt. When I was younger, I was irresponsible and often lived beyond my means. I'm working hard now to pay off my debt. Why might some people live beyond their means? Hi everyone. Part 2 Question: What kind of decisions need to be made while completing the tasks and how much time would each task take to complete? Check out this video to learn some useful vocabulary in context and get ideas for talking about a task like this. https://youtu.be/Bb-hEbCWyh8 Here's the transcript: Well, while painting, you'd be contemplating[1] the colours, maybe, and the composition[2]. Obviously, you cannot paint everything you see, so you need to make decisions about how to crop[3] the view and simplify the image. I think sewing requires you to think about the body... You need to consider the shape of the person and then determine how to create clothes which complement[4] their figure, maybe. Also, I suppose different fabrics would drape[5] differently... so you'd take think about that. Given that the man is painting outside, the painting itself probably won't take too long... maybe a few hours, maximum. The clothes would take longer, I think, but you could prolong[6] the project as needed. When you're painting outside, there's a finite[7] amount of daylight whereas you could leave a sewing project out for a few days or even weeks as needed. Here are the vocabulary notes: Notes: [1] to contemplate something - to think deeply or carefully about something [2] the composition - the arrangement of elements in a work of art [3] to crop something - to cut or trim something, such as a photograph or painting, so the image fits better on the page [4] to complement something - to enhance something by providing things that might be lacking, or that might be in harmony with it. Complement" refers to something that completes or goes well with something else, while "compliment" means to express praise or admiration for someone or something.
