SEPTEMBER AT CONSTITUTION EDUCATION: THE TOOLS OF EQUITY We’re going back to school this September. 😁 This month, we’re spending some time inside Chapter IV of Gibson’s Suits in Chancery and looking at the tools equity uses—not as magic words or phrases to throw around, but as principles we can actually learn to recognize. 🌿 A thought as I prepare for Monday... One year ago, I taught a class called Peacefully Dangerous. Looking back, I still believe much of what we talked about. But over the past year, something has shifted. We've explored trusts, trusteeship, authorship, self-governance, writing, and intentional living. As I looked back over all of those conversations, I realized they all seemed to be pointing toward the same question: What is power, really? Most people think power is found in titles, institutions, money, or control. I don't think it is. On Monday night, I'd like to share where this journey has brought me—and why I believe peace is not weakness, self-governance is one of the greatest forms of strength, and the most powerful people are often quietly building rather than constantly defending. Sometimes the strongest position isn't the one that wins every argument... It's the one that no longer needs to live in constant defense. They must be known… and they must be asserted. Otherwise, something else steps in. Administration. Process replaces principle. Procedure replaces protection. And before long, what should have been a boundary… becomes something you’re expected to comply with. This is why the Bill of Rights matters. By 1791, the people had already experienced power—both under a king and under their own new government. They weren’t guessing. They knew exactly what needed to be restrained. Amendments 4 through 6 are where those restraints become specific. Search. Seizure. Accusation. Trial. This is where boundaries are drawn. There are a lot of people right now who have formed a Private Members Agreement… but quietly hesitate when it comes time to actually use it. Not because they don’t believe in it… but because somewhere in the back of their mind they’re wondering: “What happens if I actually step forward with this?” That hesitation is more common than people admit. And it doesn’t come from nowhere. But here’s what often hasn’t been brought fully into view: The right of private association is not something new. It’s not something fringe. It’s not something that exists in a gray area. It is woven into the very fabric of this country. From the principles expressed in the Declaration of Independence… to the structure of early union under the Articles of Confederation… to the foundational protections carried forward into the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights… the ability of people to associate, assemble, and operate in the private has always been part of the design.
