From that day on. Layi was a changed person. He enrolled I a summer school to prepare for the next term. He returned from school with the most amazing results, averaging about 75% in every subject.
With such fantastic results in hand, my father confidently approached the principal of the Federal Government College, Ilorin, to ask him to consider Layi for admission into this prestigious school. His approval was instant.
Layi graduated as one of the best students in the school and gained admission into the department of Mechanical engineering, university of Ibadan.
As one of the best graduating students, he was recruited by a leading oil service company in his fourth year. Today, Layi is one of the very few African at the helms of affairs in a multinational company. He loves in Paris, having just been posted from Japan. He also worked in Tunisia, South Africa and Germany. His life is ever inch the dream he saw at the age of 12, and may I quickly add that he bought me the car in my fourth year at university, just like he said he would.
Fadekemi graduated from medical school at the age of 20. She is now a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, a specialist doctor concerned with the birth of children and the treatment of diseases and disorders in women. She works with a leading private hospital in Nigeria. Chalya got a Masters degree in Architecture at the age of 23. She lives in London and runs a successful architecture firm.
Layi holds the view that," Every student has what it takes to be a high-flyer, one who is tired of failing or returning home with average results. Success is all about making a decision to be a successful person and doing the hard work to become such a person."
This is the turning point in every student academic life, it is called THE POINT OF REALISATION.
This is the point where you come to understanding the purpose of academic pursuits.

One day during the summer break, our father asked Layi to go with him to his office, and he was the last I saw of the 'old boy'. When my father returned from the office, he came back with a young man that looked like my brother only in physical resemblance; this young man seemed much more mature. He was smiling but not carefree. There was fire in his eyes and a sparkle in his smile.
"Layi, what happened to you? What did daddy do to you?" I asked. "Damilola, Daddy just showed me the future," the young man responded.
"The future? What do you mean?" I asked, totally confused "How did he do that?" I persisted. He smiled and replied, "I just discovered that I will never become anything in life until I decide what want to be. Today, I decided I want to be successful engineer."
"But Layi, don't you have to brilliant to be a successful engineer?" I asked mockingly. " Maybe you are right, however today I discovered that hardwork is more important to becoming successful than brilliance. Everyone is brilliant, but most people are too lazy to let their brilliance shine. I am going to be a successful engineer and make a lot of money; I might even buy a car, if you are a good boy." That sounded like music to my ears.
It was no surprise when the common entrance results were released. Fadeke gained admission into Federal Government College, Ilorin, reputed to be one of the best schools in Nigeria at that time, while Chalya was accepted into Federal Government Girls College, Oyo.
Of all his friends and classmates, Layi was the only one who could not gain admission into any of the Federal schools. Our father was so ashamed as he had personal relationships with the principals, begging for the admission of his first son, yet none was able to accept Layi because of his poor results. At the end of a long and frustrating search, he was graciously permitted into a poorly rated school in our hometown.
My brother was so devastated by his inability to gain admission into a federal school, and this terribly affected his performance during his first two years, where he was unable to shine even in a school where most of his classmates struggled to construct a correct sentence in English.
