Within right wing circles, I occasionally see memes suggesting that medieval peasants led better lives than many people today. These specific memes all seem to be endorsing feudalism as a superior system that benefits the common man more than anything offered by modern society. It’s all part of this greater meme that tries to force you into this light-switch-brain false-dichotomy of feudalism/totalitarianism vs gobohomo-capitalist democracy. However it’s just a meme. In truth, by nearly every measurable standard, the life of a medieval peasant was significantly harsher and dirtier than life today. Perhaps the only advantage they had was a heightened sense of purpose, driven by the fact that many decisions they faced were life-or-death matters. Their existence was generally marked by hardship and limited autonomy under the feudal system, including very harsh punishments for minor transgressions — for example, being tortured for hunting the kings deer.
