A fisherman once spotted a female whale entangled in fishing nets east of the Farallon Islands and radioed for help. Within hours, a rescue team arrived to find her in very poor condition and the only way to save her was to dive into the water and untangle her - a very dangerous undertaking. A flick of her fluke could kill a rescuer. The rescuers worked for hours with curved knives and finally freed her. Once free, she swam joyfully in circles around the divers. Then she returned to each diver, nudging them, giving them a gentle squeeze and thanking them. Some said it was the most incredible experience of their lives.
