Am heutigen Montag um 20:19 Uhr mitteleuropäischer Sommerzeit ist Herbstanfang. Der Zenit der Sonne überquert die Linie des Äquators in Richtung Südhalbkugel. An diesem Tag ist es weltweit näherungsweise zwölf Stunden hell und zwölf Stunden dunkel. Bis Weihnachten schmelzen die hellen Stunden dann auf der Nordhalbkugel immer weiter zusammen.
In Umfragen rangiert der Herbst bei den Deutschen in der Beliebtheitsskala weit hinter Sommer und Frühling. Er steht gelegentlich für Ernte und Fülle, meist aber für Vergänglichkeit und Melancholie.
