This is partly due to inadequate initial training, as the unit leaders did not always give the necessary attention to the ideological orientation of the troops. Furthermore, the Standard includes Landsturm units from purely or predominantly Catholic regions. Here, some of the men still have very strong religious ties, and it happens repeatedly that a Sunday sermon ruins all the preceding training work. The men stationed individually in Catholic villages are too strongly influenced by their surroundings. Nevertheless, even here the general atmosphere has noticeably improved, and the remaining influence of church circles is generally diminishing as the men are encouraged through training to think and reflect for themselves." [...] As far as is known, the bishops have also received instructions from the Vatican to attempt to counter National Socialism through compromise for the foreseeable future. Among Catholic bishops, there is talk that the Vatican first needs a truce with Germany to consolidate its position in southwestern Europe. The Church currently places great hopes on Laval's efforts to reach a concordat with the Vatican. It is anticipated that, following the conclusion of this concordat, a secondary alliance with Italy will be established, leading to the formation of a Catholic-Romanian bloc of southwestern European states including France, Spain, and Portugal. Once this front is consolidated, the hope is for a sustained period of unrest in Greater Germany, if not the destruction of National Socialism altogether through American intervention in the current war." Other bishops/Cardinals agreed with this proposal in winning through compromise and concessions on behalf of the German government: "Cardinal Faulhaber has since suffered a severe health collapse and is also largely shaken mentally. He has significantly changed his position today. Recently, in private circles, he stated verbatim: "In 1933, National Socialism was still a small stream and could easily have been channeled into appropriate Christian paths. Today, National Socialism has become a raging torrent, and it is the great fault of the German bishops and their advisors that they failed at that time to overcome National Socialism through compromise. Lieutenant General Bock of the German army gave a policy assessment report to the Reich Governor and Gauleiter on the situation in Poland: "It must not be overlooked that, apart from the necessary harsh measures of expropriation and resettlement, the Poles are being driven to a state of despair by the closure of churches, the shooting of priests, the destruction of holy images before their very eyes, the constant threat that all Poles must leave the country as quickly as possible, and the constant insecurity of their own lives. This despair can only intensify with the approaching winter and increasing hardship. Since only about 10 percent of the population is German, some of whom live widely scattered on isolated farms throughout the country, their protection against acts of desperation by the Poles is extremely jeopardized by the current troop and police presence in the military district." Just like how our modern 20th century promoters of "science" attempt to do the same, they ultimately follow up in not truly refuting the reality of race. The Official Nationalsozialistische Monatshefte in 1938 documents this entire event: "Fascism's pronouncements on the race question prompted the Pope to present the Roman Catholic Church's position on this crucial issue for Europe in emphatic terms at a reception for students of the "Propaganda Fide" college future ambassadors of the Roman Catholic Church. "It is denied," the Pope stated, "that the human race as a whole is one great and universal race." The Pope then attempted to justify this equation of the terms "human race" and "race," a sign of how audacious even the supreme pontiff found this approach. This becomes even clearer when the Pope explained in his speech, among other things, that within this universal race there was also room "for particular races as well as just as many variations and nationalities; in the same way that great variations appear in significant musical compositions, in which the same main motif is often seen recurring in a different key and with different expression, so too is there only one great universal Catholic race in the human race, and within it various variations." (According to "Osservatore Romano" of July 30, 1938.) This subordination of "particular races" to the "universal Catholic race" originates in the missionary goals of the Catholic Church. The conversion, that is, the Catholicization of the world, can only be maintained as a task and aspiration of the Roman Catholic Church if one clings to the fiction of a universal human race to the point of dogmatic dilution. In the same address, the Pope himself stated with all desirable clarity the reason for combating German racial ideology and German racial research. "To make life in the world Catholic," the Pope described as the task of the Roman Catholic Church. The Vatican sees German racial doctrine as the greatest obstacle on this path, and attempts are made to combat it not through radical rejection, but through devaluation and distortion. The most significant decision by the Roman Catholic Church in this struggle over the race question is undoubtedly the letter from the Secretary of the Roman Congregation for Seminaries and Universities, i.e., the Vatican's "Ministry of Education", to the rectors of Catholic universities throughout the world (dated April 13, 1938). [...] This "most supreme" decree will form the basis for the Roman Catholic Church's future campaign against German racial doctrine. The entire scientific apparatus of the Church will be deployed to combat and, if possible, prevent a new world order based on ethnicity, because it stands in the way of the Roman Catholic Church's claim to global dominance and its realization. However, the eight established principles already reveal what the outcome of the Roman Catholic universities' "scientific" analysis of German racial doctrine will be. Not only will the results of German racial research be distorted, but "doctrines" that were never actually formulated will be attributed to German racial policy. We will return to this Vatican decree for combating and refuting German racial doctrine elsewhere. [...] So we see: Judaism and the Roman Catholic Church are issuing the same slogans." What kind of soldier would he be if he were called up for war service yet faced no hardships? The greater the hardships I endure, the greater and more wonderful the certainty that I have truly accomplished something. If duty permits, my Feldwebel, my training NCO, and I will hold a small solstice celebration in our barracks room. For this purpose, I had fir boughs sent from my hometown in Thuringia to give the room a fitting appearance for this dignified occasion. This will be an opportunity for many of my comrades to learn why we celebrate the solstice—and how an alien race managed to overshadow and suppress this solstice, which our forefathers celebrated long ago, by replacing it with a religious festival. Unfortunately, the emphasis here remains on a religious festival rather than on commemorating the solstice, which holds far greater significance for us. Christianity is opposed based on racial, scientific, and historical grounds. "If we seriously discuss this question among the Unterführer, it is because these matters are officially off-limits today, and we therefore want to emphasize at the outset that what is said here is intended only for the general public. The struggle against the Church already exists, but in a form that has so far avoided open conflict. We cannot afford to divide the German people into two camps through a religious and ideological conflict without risking serious setbacks in the conduct of the war. The Reichsführer's order that church matters are not to be discussed with outsiders will also be well known. On the other hand, we junior officers are being asked by our men why we hold this particular view, why we, for example, call ourselves Gottgläubig and reject everything to do with Christianity. — Therefore, it is necessary that we at least inform ourselves to some extent about this. This alone is the purpose of the lectures that will be given in the near future within the Unterführercorps on Christianity, the Church, etc. [...] The Bible is considered the best evidence for everything we accuse Christian doctrine of, everything we reject and oppose. It, the textbook of the Christian Church, upon which all doctrine is built, contains so much counter-evidence to the dogmas established by the Catholic Church, and contradicts itself so often, that hardly any other evidence is needed to refute everything that has been forcibly imposed on our people for millennia. It should be noted that the racial strength of the Germanic people has been most clearly demonstrated here, for no other people on earth is engaged in such a constant struggle with Christianity as the Germanic peoples. — We will discuss this point in more detail later in the lectures. Our faith is an attitude toward God that has become one through personal experience; therefore, we need no mediator between us and our God, and certainly no commandments that are self-evident to us and whose imposition strikes us as an unjustified and intolerable form of paternalism. We fundamentally reject the fruitless discussions about the afterlife and the associated doctrines of salvation and the soul, because knowledge of the things of life is more crucial than the idle question of what comes after death. We therefore emphasize a healthy, natural awareness of this world and the long-neglected care of the body. Seeking a substitute for the Christian religion is a weakness of character. We see our resurrection in our own children and know that the only goal for us humans in this world is blood. Therefore, the will to become a child, which the people can be systematically raised to become, is the most important prerequisite for fulfilling this principle, lest we conclude that, without its fulfillment, the people are doomed to perish. Furthermore, we reject the Church and demand that children be raised according to the natural principles of German, native breeding, for which the man will be responsible."
