Tech layoffs balloon in January
DEXE58 @ Medtronic
23,670 workers have been laid off, the most in any month since March 2023.
Bidenomics at play. Meanwhile Democrats are busy inviting millions of illegals through open borders as well as thousands of visa folks while millions of new grads and unemployed locals look for jobs. Great job.

Debating whether to have a child in my late 20s
hiii3 @ Google
My (28) husband (33) really wants to have 2 children and I know the clock is ticking. None of my friends are married and I feel like having a child will make me feel even more left out and Iām not even sure if I really want one now.
Edit - To add more context here:
My husband doesnāt want to have a huge age gap with his children which I get, and I feel like it was my mistake to marry him in the first place knowing he definitely wants a child and I was 50/50 about it. I thought getting married would make me fully onboard to have one, but that did not happen.

The absolute best thing about Donald Trump
TYXX53 @ Apple
Is that heās going to lose this year, and when he finally dies his supporters are so brainwashed that they will believe he faked his own death to own the deep state and continue to write in his name for decades to come.
The Republicans will never win another national election again. He has thoroughly destroyed the Republican Party.
Well done sir.

Amazon layoff ruined mine and my familyās life
amzn_sv @ ex-GlobalLogic
My spouse and I were employees at @Amazon. I was a L5 PgM, while my wife served as a QAE. Unfortunately, in mid-2023, we experienced unexpected layoffs from @amazon, despite being recognized as top performers. Our once stable life, as we were working towards clearing our $100K+ debt and building financial future, took an abrupt turn for the worse. Since then, we've been unable to secure new employment. We both have applied to 100s of jobs and interviewed countless times. However, we have been unable to secure a job offer. We have depleted our emergency funds and exhausted loan options. Iām at a point where Iām not sure if iāll be able to cover next month's rent, leaving our future and survival in limbo. š Iām one step away from losing my sanity. Iām doing all kinds of odd jobs (driving uber, lyft, delivery, etc) but making barely enough to pay bills. š It's disheartening to see how corporations can disrupt the lives of so many individuals and get away with itā¦

TC: 0 ($160K while @Amazon)

Edit: Addressing individuals making insensitive remarks about our $100,000 debt: We acquired this financial burden as a result of an unforeseen life emergency. I genuinely wish none of you experience what we had to endure.

Was laid off last Friday. Took a week off from the internet to clear my head and just hopping back. Here's my plan
laidfresh @ ex-Wayfair
I was shocked. The last 9 months of 2023 we worked our butts off. Weekends, late evenings, only 2 PTO days and gave back many more in the form of weekends. Canceled family plans for the job and faced their wrath. Was promised I would get the time back in 2024, and had been approved for promotion. Then, I open my email Friday morning and see that I was impacted.
After a week without any devices, I have come back with a plan.
I learned I need to look out for myself first and foremost. You can sacrifice your family, health and time for the company and have good relations with manager and skip, but these decisions are made 4 levels up and they have no clue what you're doing. I have to prioritize myself first.
My goal: 12 months from now, I should look back on this event as a blessing.
1. Health: I gave my health up for this job. No more. I am starting a fitness plan and targeting losing 30 pounds over 6 months. Will be biking primarily as my knees are bad. I will join a race as I learn more targeting early 2025. No fitness at the moment as I haven't exercised in years.
2. Community: I have learned work is not the place to get community. I was involved in work book clubs, and other groups. It can be taken away at a moments notice. I have signed up for local volunteering as my first step towards this, next Wednesday.
3. Work: 8 years at one company, I am completely out of touch with interview related stuff. I plan on taking a month to study hard, and start applying in 4 weeks time. Not sure if it will be enough, but my admin leave has 7 weeks left so I don't wanna waste too much time.
As painful as this had been, I am going to make this event something I look back on as a blessing. This is my story and my plan to move forward, would appreciate anyone interested enough to give their thoughts and check in on me in the future š Cheers everyone
Edit: Just wanted to add that luckily, I am fortunate enough to have enough savings to last me for 9 months or so and visa is not an issue. Could be so much worse

Woman getting promoted faster and faster
chicken12 @ Amazon
With limited promotions possibilities and L10s/L8s being audited for women leaders count, you are much likely to get promoted to L6 or L7 or L8 as a woman vs man. I know there has been bias against women and it continues in other contexts, but at Amazon itās clearly a reverse bias. I have a wife and kids including daughters so I am not someone who doesnāt understand both sides but itās still not seem right.
I have seen woman getting promoted in the year they had 4-5 month maternity breaks, some even getting promoted on a maternity break.
Nothing against women but it hurts when itās not plan, simple meritocracy.
Have you observed this reverse bias?

COBRA premium is extremely high
lolipop19 @ Flagstar Bank
Why are the COBRA premium so high it is like a joke? My friend got laid off and her premium is like $3800 a month to continue the same plan, is this ridiculous? How can people afford this when laid off?

Wth is going on?
MuadāDic @ Microsoft
1. Stocks are flying high
2. Layoffs after layoffs
3. Hiring is still low
4. Interest rates are high for over a year
5. Housing prices never crashed, even with stock crash in late 2022 and layoffs in 2023 (tech dominated areas like bay area, seattle etc)
None of this makes any sense.

Itās wild how high state taxes are and people seem to normalize it.
doobius @ Stripe
Itās crazy how high state taxes in Cali and NYC are but people seem to normalize it.
If you earn 350k in Manhattan, youāll pay about 25 - 30k in taxes more.
Itās probably cheaper to live in Miami and fly to NYC in Spring and Fall (only seasons worth it to be in NYC), stay in a nice hotel, eat great meals and still come out ahead.
If you account for lower cost of living, thereās more savings to be had.
New Yorkers how do you justify this? Paying extra taxes to live in a city, just so that you have to pay the highest rent in the country, use one of the grimiest modes of transportation, not being able to own a car so you carry your groceries home, and having your public schools shut down because they are housing illegal immigrants?
I guess free museum access must be great? /s

Husband thinks I should quit to care for kids
heing @ Twilio
My husband and me have a combined TC of 640k, yet he thinks we donāt make enough money and regrets not moving to Florida.
He is also convincing me to quiet quit my job so I can invest more time in the kids academics (ages 5 and 3), activities and teach them discipline to get into the habit of doing homework etc. I donāt want to do this. I donāt like my job, itās hard and challenging, but I want to keep working because for me itās harder to care for the kids and do housework. The kids donāt always sit if I ask them to study and my head hurts thinking of creative ways of grabbing their attention to get them to sit. I still do it sometimes, because I believe I am inherently a creative person, but I donāt want to do this everyday. I rather they just play with each other which they love and do so well. Iām not able to sit with them on the weekends either because I am cooking or cleaning or meeting friends(with them), and thatās it. All 4 of us love meeting friends, and on days we do, we canāt get much of studies/housework done.
My friend on the other hand wants to quit her job so she can do exactly that.
My husband is ready to quit too and be a stay at home dad, but I donāt think he would be okay with the decision, plus I am not sure about him leaving his higher salary stable job and replying on my unstable lower than him salary job. Doubt heāll find another job with the same TC in the current market.
What are the pros and cons of being a stay at home mom?

Why are we not unionizing?
noiandiamo @ Henry Meds
The sheer number of layoffs that have happened since 2020 has been absurd. Hundreds of thousands of jobs have been cut, and it's been a steady onslaught of layoffs ever since. So far it doesn't seem like 2024 is going to be any better. Tech workers deserve job security. I feel terrified to buy a house because it just feels like everything is always so shaky these days and we can't plan our lives around it. Even though companies are posting record-breaking profits and taking fat bonus checks, they're still cutting ~15-20% of staff?
This should be illegal. Europe has protections for its citizens to prevent companies from doing layoffs like this, but the US has absolutely zero protections in place. Not to mention the maximum amount of unemployment one can claim in most states is horrifyingly low compared to the cost of living. Why aren't we fighting back and rioting? Why are we letting these big tech companies just exploit us and treat us like indentured servants who should be so lucky to have a job at all? #layoffs #unions

Biden is suing Texas for literally defending its border
maga 2024 @ SpaceX
Biden is suing Texas for literally defending its border. Canāt make this shit upš¤”š¤”š¤”š¤”. Texans are building barbed wire and floating buoys in the rio grandeāyou know, something that any reasonable state would do to attempt to stem the flow of 15k+ illegals entering their territory daily, and the federal government is wasting taxpayer money on SUING the state in lawfare efforts to cut down this barbed wire instead of doing anything about the literal invasion in our country. Elections have consequences.
