TEA TIME TIP Time to fertilise With seedlings in the garden starting to grow, it’s time to start feeding them so you get maximum yield. Today we’re covering leafy vegetables such as lettuce, rocket, kale, spinach, silverbeet, swiss chard, rhubarb, collard greens, bok choi and cabbage. Basically anything where you are eating the leaves. These veges need nitrogen-rich fertiliser. Examples of nitrogen rich fertiliser are compost/weed tea, composted/pelletised manure, blood and bone, seaweed fertiliser and fish emulsion fertiliser. Apply this fertiliser every 2 weeks for best results and lush, healthy greens.

TEA TIME TIP Time to fertilise - Potatoes 🥔 Potatoes should be growing vigorously now so it’s important to start feeding them now. A bit of a balance is required for potatoes as you need sufficient nitrogen for leaf growth so the plant can shade its roots and tubers so they don’t dry out but you also need potassium and phosphorus and other micronutrients for the tubers to grow nice and big. So they need LOTS of energy which means regular fertilising. A balanced fertiliser such as blood and bone or well composted animal manure is perfect for potatoes. You can make a very weak “manure tea” by soaking well aged (definitely NOT fresh) manure in water overnight then diluting well (1part manure tea to 10 parts water) and watering every two weeks (make sure the liquid is poured onto the surrounding soil and not on the plant so it doesn’t burn). Or you can spread a little well composted or pelletised manure or blood and bone around the plants (again don’t touch the plants with the fertiliser) every month. 🥔 🥔

TEA TIME TIP Time to fertilise - Carrots and Beets I have made the mistake in the past if giving my carrots too much nitrogen fertiliser. While nitrogen fertiliser gave me beautiful, lush green growth on the top (which is edible btw), I got thin white string underneath - no carrots. So, to fertilise carrots and other root vegetables like parsnips and beets, use a potassium rich fertiliser such as a little wood ash or compost made from food scraps. This type of fertiliser will last for some time so you don’t have to repeat it until you can see that the ash or compost you’ve placed around your carrots has been “absorbed “ by the soil or integrated by the worms into the soil.

TEA TIME TIP Time to fertilise - Herbs Like all leafy greens, herbs need lots of nitrogen to produce plenty of lush green growth. So, to fertilise herbs use a nitrogen rich fertiliser such as compost/weed tea, composted/pelletised manure, blood and bone, seaweed fertiliser and fish emulsion fertiliser every 2 weeks

TEA TIME TIP Time to fertilise - Melons and Squash Much like tomatoes and other fruiting vegetables, melons and squash need different types of fertiliser at different stages in their growth cycle. If you’ve got seedlings growing in early stages of growth, they need nitrogen-rich fertiliser. Examples of nitrogen rich fertiliser are compost/weed tea, composted/pelletised manure, blood and bone, seaweed fertiliser and fish emulsion fertiliser evert 2 weeks. As the plants start to flower, STOP giving them nitrogen fertiliser and SWITCH to potassium and phosphorus rich fertilisers such as wood ash, or compost with banana peels in it. Sulphate of potash is also commercially available. All purpose fertilisers will also be fine just as long as they are not predominantly nitrogen rich. These potassium rich fertilisers will help your plants produce more flowers thus increasing your yield. Just be careful with these fertilisers to add only a little as too much can burn your plants. Do this until they finish fruiting. 🍉

TEA TIME TIP Time to fertilise - Tomatoes 🍅 With tomato seedlings in the garden starting to grow, it’s time to start feeding them so you get maximum growth. BUT - be careful with tomato plants because they need DIFFERENT fertilisers at different stages of growth. At the early stage of a tomato plant’s life, when they are seedlings and in early stages of growth, they need nitrogen-rich fertiliser. Examples of nitrogen rich fertiliser are compost/weed tea, composted/pelletised manure, blood and bone, seaweed fertiliser and fish emulsion fertiliser evert 2 weeks. As the plants start to flower, STOP giving them nitrogen fertiliser and SWITCH to potassium and phosphorus rich fertilisers such as wood ash, or compost with banana peels in it.
