TEA TIME TIP Learn to dissect a whole chicken At the moment, chicken drumsticks are some of the cheapest cuts of meat you can buy @ $4/kg. BUT you’re paying for a lot of bone in that $4/kg. It’s actually better value for money to buy a WHOLE chicken @ $5.50/kg and dissect it into pieces for the meat. You get all of the cuts of chicken to use in chicken dishes PLUS the back and neck sections to use separately for chicken soup. All you need is a good strong kitchen knife or a pair of kitchen scissors (available from most supermarkets, kitchen stores or online - $15-20 should get you a nice sturdy pair of scissors and be well worth the investment in the long run). MONEY SAVING TIP With the price of fuel so high at the moment, it’s a good time to think about how to reduce your fuel costs. Try this: 1. Try to shop locally if you can and walk to the shops. You’ll be supporting local businesses instead of global giants as well as getting a little exercise walking 🚶‍♀️ 2. If the shops are a bit further away and you only have a couple of things to get, drag out your backpack and the pushbike (if you have one) and ride to the shop. More exercise 🚲 3. If you don’t have a bike or the shops are too far to ride to, catch the bus or train. It’s generally cheaper than fuel 🚌 🚂 4. If you have no choice but to drive, check out this website (pictures of searches attached) where you can find the cheapest fuel in your area. It covers the whole state of NSW and Vic I think. TEA TIME TIP Washing soda (which is different to bicarb soda) is also an excellent cleaner especially for mould, stubborn stains and for cleaning your oven. A scoop in normal washing with half the normal amount of powder or by itself is excellent for cleaning clothing and soaking to remove stains. It’s also good for cleaning mould off walls, ceilings and concrete and it helps eliminate the mould spores. Available in the supermarket near the laundry powders - $5 for 1kg and a little goes a long way so you can save LOTS of money instead of buying branded laundry powders and other cleaners. TEA TIME TIP Bean Bonanza!! If you’re looking for a crop to grow with SUPER FAST results to get good on your table in the shortest time possible then BEANS are a great option. Beans are extremely EASY TO GROW and have a VERY SHORT TIME TO HARVEST. This picture is of my first harvest from our bean plants after only 7 weeks from planting the seeds and we only have about 10 plants! The plants will continue to flower and produce beans throughout the summer and are fairly resilient to pests and diseases. Beans are full of Vitamin C, antioxidants, folate, potassium and a host of other nutrients. Plus they are packed with fibre. It’s not to late to plant some beans in your garden and beans are a great addition - particularly if you’re looking to cut your veggie bill. #becksbasics

TEA TIME TIP Save food - save money Do you have carrots (or other veges) in your fridge that look like this? (These came straight out of my crisper drawer😁). DON’T THROW THEM OUT! They are still good food even though they don’t look pretty. You can make soups with them or throw them in stews or casseroles to add volume, flavour and nutrients. So, there’s no need to buy new veges - you can save money as well as reducing your food waste and getting the best value out of the money you’ve already spent on veges. TEA TIME TIP Save on your shopping bill With prices constantly going up and since we’re all trying to get more food into our emergency storage, it’s important to save as much money as we can on shopping bills. Three tips are: ⁃ before you go shopping, make a meal plan for the week ⁃ make a shopping list of everything you need for the week (include everything - not just food) PLUS whatever food storage items you can afford to buy and ONLY buy what’s on the list ⁃ don’t shop when you’re hungry These tips should help you to avoid impulse buying and the money you save can either be put aside as emergency cash or put towards more emergency food. Worm farms The fastest way to recycle kitchen scraps that takes up very little space and gets the absolute BEST natural fertiliser for your garden. It’s dead easy to do. You can build one with recycled materials for $0 other than the cost of the worms( see a great “how to” video from Gardening Australia on YouTube entitled Easy DIY Mobile Worm Farm). You can also buy commercial ones from the hardware or local garden centres (examples shown in the comments). TEA TIME TIP Time to fertilise - fruit trees If your fruit trees are flowering and developing little fruit on them right now then it’s time to fertilise them. Just imagine how much energy your trees need to grow fruit - lots! So give them a good dose of an all round fertiliser - well aged manure is a great option and make sure they’re mulched well to keep the moisture content nice and stable.
