| 2 | #MarkMinervini: āKeys to winning in the Stock Marketā
Until the right opportunity emerges, I pay special attention to preservation of capital above capital appreciation. When a promising opportunity eventually presents itself, Iām
ready to act swiftly and aggressively with the bulk of my capital intact.
Remember, the top three priorities in trading:
First, is preservation of capital. Next is consistency in executing your plan. When you have these two things mastered, you can then pursue the third, which is superior performance.
In stock trading, waiting is the hard part.
While you are sidelined, reading latest news or watching the Dow move up may pressure you to make trades that you would
normally not take. Patience is the key. Daily surveillance is necessary, while suppressing the temptation for action, meaning the desire to initiate a trade, until the right opportunities present themselves.
I conduct intensive research to identify trading ideas and follow those ideas like a hawk. When the time comes to put money to work, the decision is be automatic and obvious. To
trade like this, in almost a Zen like manner, you must trade when the conditions are favorable. Trading should be effortless. If your trading is causing you difficulty or stress,
then something is wrong with your criteria or timing, or else youāre trading too large.
When the market is not acting great and thereās no clear market leadership, play it small with pilot positions. This ccomplishes two things:
First, you will test the market and keep its pulse. Once you get a strong heartbeat, you can step it up.
Second, you stay in trading shape. Trading is just like working a muscle; if you donāt work it, it loses strength.
Stay in trading shape by using pilot positions as āsparring partners.ā However, donāt slug it out and get hurt with your sparring partner. Instead, wait for the main event and then
give it your all to capture the championship belt.
Sacrifice: Must know who you are and what you will be doing- A successful Trader will need to establish their edge
Status: Do you want to be a Hyundai or a Mercedes?
The average trader spends the majority of his/her time in between
Indecisiveness <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>> Regret
Should I buyI should have bought
Should I sellI should have sold
Should I holdI should have held
50% win rate is enough
KEY Point: Perfectly executing your plan is the key, not perfectly trading the stock | 28 |
| 3 | You'll never hear people say they managed their risk, took small losses, and still, their account went down to zero.
In fact, you'll hear the opposite. | 31 |
| 4 | #18 ā The market is a discounting mechanism. When the consensus suggests that the āGolden Crossā will break to the upside or that the XYZ indicator is flashing red, most likely the opposite will happen.
#19 ā The market has trends that are broadly predictable, but it also has a lot of noise; hence, no strategy, no matter how effective will win all the time.
#20 Systems with low risk, high rewards profiles are the most anti-fragile and robust ones even though they typically display low win percentages. The reason is that they thrive despite losses and not due to their absence.
#21 ā The difference between a 30% and a 3000% return per annum is often audacity.
#22 ā The market is a dynamic process āwhat has consistently worked yesterday may not work today. Hence, consistent profitability is a balancing act. Itās about understanding the inevitability of drawdowns; itās recognizing the market phase(s) you thrive in; itās pushing the gas pedal when itās easy for you to make money and releasing it when itās hard for you to make money.
#23 ā If you get excited when you win and depressed when you lose, you risk doing things badly. This will make it difficult to generate superior results. Win or loss, your reaction should be indifference.
#24 ā Periods of rest and recovery are part of the job description. On the weekends, let your mind rest, spend time with family⦠grab a good book. And, once in a while, take some vacation. Expand your perspective; donāt just feed your mind with trading, markets, profits, and losses. If you donāt allow yourself to unplug from time to time, trading wonāt be sustainable long term, no matter how much money youāre making in the short term.
#25 ā Everyone makes mistakes. Even when we know better. And yes, even the pros. The myth of the perfectly rational trader/investor is just that⦠a myth. If you can keep your mistakes to a bare minimum; keep your losses small; take bigger profits on most of your winning trades, youāll still do well. (And this is coming from a flawed human being who still makes mistakes but who have enjoyed a positive performance in the aggregate over the past decade.) | 30 |
| 5 | n this post, Iād like to share 25 trading psychology lessons I learned the hard way over my 14+ years in the market as a trader.
Time fliesā¦it really does.
Yesterday, I was looking at the 24-year-old me in some old photographs and I couldnāt help but notice how much Iāve changed.
Back then, I was skinny; I looked pale, stressed, and unhappy⦠I was a struggling trader.
Still, against all odds, I was determined to push through the difficulty because I knew that trading was something I wanted to get good at.
That commitment surely paid off.
Off the top of my head, here are a few trading psychology lessons Iāve learned on this journey.
Iāve Been Trading For 14 Years. Hereās What Iāve Learned
CLICK TO TWEET
#1 ā Trading is difficult to master. Anyone can learn a technical signal in an hour or two, but the right mindset takes years to develop āpossibly a lifetime.
#2 ā Risk management is crucial, and itās both an art and a science. Thatās why most people are really bad at it. They understand the āscienceā part of it, but the art part (the part that is up to your discretion) is where things get tricky.
#3 ā An edge is easy to come up with. No need for a degree in statistics, just basic common sense goes a long way. Buying when everything within you is screaming āWait!!ā; holding when everything within is screaming āSell!!ā; selling when everything within you is screaming āHold!!ā⦠thatās the real challenge.
#4 ā Price action is human psychology. At times, itāll be predictable; at times not.
#5 ā Success happens to those who keep taking their chances, manage their risk, and stay in the game. Most people donāt stay in the game long enough, thatās why they fail.
#6 ā You need a good strategy. Thatās pretty obvious. Whatās not-so-obvious is that you also need a particular type of mindset ā a traderās mindset. By all means, work on it: read books, get a coach, take a mindset course, meditate⦠itāll all pay in the end.
#7 ā If youāre not in the right mood, stay away from the market. This is not the state of mind you want to be in when making important financial decisions. Take the day off. New opportunities will materialize⦠the market isnāt going anywhere, but your capital is if you trade with a compromised mindset.
#8 ā Different strategies work for different people in different places, at different times. Donāt be dogmatic and think that the only strategy that works is yours.
#9 ā The traders who have an uncontrollable urge to make money lose money.
#10 ā Less is more when it comes to news and other tradersā opinions. Trust your strategy and process and let that be your entire world. Thatās how you become a money-making trader.
#11 ā The game of trading has a lot to do with your mindsetāIād say 90% of it. Donāt ask me how I came up with this, itās just a number that makes sense to me based on my experience ā over my 14 years of trading, Iāve made and lost quite a substantial amount of money in the market. Mark my words, without the right mindset, you wonāt make it. Even with the best trading strategy in the world.
#12 ā If building (and keeping) wealth is your main goal, you should always seek ways to generate income. Aside from trading, invest in a business (or a few of them), invest in real-estate, create an online business ābut, perhaps, above all, learn to live frugally.
#13 ā Objective judgment is very important. For you to be and remain objective, you must not be attached to money or being right.
#14 ā A calm and rational mindset (no matter what happens) is absolutely key. You need to understand and focus on what you can control and not worry about (and accept) what you canāt control.
#15 ā Youāll be wrong a lotābeing wrong shouldnāt scare you.
#16 ā Discipline is not a feeling of motivation; itās a hard choice. Consistency is not someplace you arrive at; itās an ongoing effort.
#17 ā A good trader needs flexibility and conviction āyes, both can co-exist. | 28 |

I was talking with a fellow trader yesterday and he was just casually mentioning about the lackluster returns he is getting in his investment (investing for last 18 yrs)
Based on the conv we had, wanted to share some things that came into my mind now
(1/n)
1. Many folks talk about the right attitude for getting successful in the markets. Why that 'right' attitude is needed?
Attitude is how we deal with the inevitable adverse situations we face frequently in the mkts - handling the constant 2 steps fwd & 2 steps backward š
(2/n)
Irrespective of the profession, we have seen every pro going through long flat times. As it is impossible to stay on top of our game 100% all the time, slumps are inevitable.
Once we have dug ourselves out of a hole, no matter how long it takes, we know we can do it again (3/n)
If we had reduced weight once, we know that it can be done (even if gain back some) again.
Trust me - this is an extremely important weapon (that knowledge) to possess. If we have done something once, it is a repeatable act. This knowledge can make us very stronger š
(4/n)
2. Traders usually have difficulty in separating the reality of the losing trade from the psychological sense of feeling like a loser. At some level, many traders equate losing with being a loser š
This creates lot of agony, anxiety and frustration to the trader
(5/n)
Consequently, it interferes with their decision- making process and their P/L is just a blank check written against their self-image/esteem.
Hence, it is imperative that we understand that a losing trade/set of losing trades does not equate us to be a loser.
(6/n)
3. Many folks react differently when they are under pressure. They get tensed and judgement is often impaired. Many talented pro athletes cannot make it as they choke when the pressure is ON. Like the jinx SA cricket team carries during pressure matches. They choke
(7/n)
This is why one could be a brilliant analyst but can be a lousy trader. Consistency is far more important than brilliance š
As a trader, we should strive for consistency in what we do & take the performance pressures out of our mind. All successful pros do this naturally
(8/n)
4. Ok - fair enough....but lets say that we are following a methodology consistently (keyword here) and making money..How do we make more money? By taking more leverage? a big NO š±
Rather, we need to increase the number of lots we trade in commensurate with the acct size
(9/n)
Essentially, we should not over-leverage but trade more lots. Proper (even under-leverage) leverage is the key to having longevity in trading
5. It is too easy to lose money than make money in trading. Many folks think that they enjoy trading but in reality, they don't š
(10/n)
Trading is downright boring (profitable trading, i mean š), feels lonely during the day, mentally exhausting with little or no structure/security wrapped around it. But there are numerous patterns ready to be exploited by a prudent trader š
Happy trading all !!
